You're killing me here Mike!
That should have been an awfully good clue!

Oh, I already knew about that one, I just wanted some porn and to see what else Brian sent you.
Ask and you shall receive...
2008_PIF.jpg

From Left to Right:
  • Rochefort 10
  • 2002 Aventinus Wheat Dopplebock
  • Sexual Chocolate
  • Terrapin Hop Shortage Ale
  • Avery Maharaja Imperial IPA
  • Great Divide Hercules Double IPA
  • 2006 Rogue XS Imperial Stout
  • 2007 Thomas Hardy's Ale
  • Hobgoblin glassware
  • Cigar: 2007 Don Carlos Edicion de Anniversario

So obviously the Sexual Chocolate was the beer that Jonesy indicated would create a bulge in your shorts, but he threw in a few phenomenal beers on top of that. I mentioned that I'm a hophead, so there are 3 great DIPAs, but also said that I like RIS (hence the Chocolate and Rogue XS), and was looking to get into Belgian beers (Rochefort 10). Very nice all around, Jonesy...not a single beer I'd ever tried before! Who said there were no good breweries in the Carolinas? I will pull my DVD copy of "Coming to America" out and enjoy the Sexual Chocolate while watching.

There's actually a funny story behind the Maharaja, too, but I'll wait and let some of you "oooh" and "aaah" before I tell it (and ask the all-important question).

Thanks, Jonesy!

Glad you liked the selection Mike! I'm not big into hoppy beers so I had to go see my guy in Charlotte to pick out a few for you and that's when I saw the bottle of Sexual Chocolate on his "show off" shelf behind the register. Since I'm a regular there he grabbed a bottle for me out of the back. I figured that as much as I've seen you guys ooohh and aaahh over this particular beer, it would be the perfect thing to throw in the BIF package for you. The Terrapin Side Project looked like it would be right up your alley as it's a one time release and supposed to be "extra hoppy". This was the first time in a long time that Mike's been able to get in any Rochfort 10 so I grabbed one for you and a few for me  . The Aventinus has been in my stash for about 10 months now. Pete (Aventinus) gifted me a bottle of this last year and when I saw them in Mike's shop, I loaded up on them too. The Rogue I've had for about a year and the Thomas Hardy's about 8 months so really only the DIPA's and the Sexual Chocolate are "new from the store" beers. Hope you enjoy them, it was fun putting this together!

Damn Jonesy! That is one hell of a package, well done man.

Enjoy those Mike, you deserve them!

Very nice Brian! Let us know how that Sexual Chocolate is when you drink it Philly Mike.

OK, well the usual suspects have checked in, so on to my story about the Maharaja. Last Saturday I attended a BA gathering at The Drafting Room in Springhouse (pics of the event here). The deal was that the bar would provide a room, some light snacks and water, while everyone else would supply the beer. I had two stouts picked out and ready to go when the doorbell rang about 30 min. before I was going to leave. It was Jonesy's BIF package. Obviously I couldn't wait to open it, so I tore in and saw the Maharaja. I actually had a bottle of this sitting in my fridge waiting for an appropriate time to try it, but I figured since I now had two, I'd bring one to the event with me.

When I got there I noticed a raffle table that had a growler on ice, some paper, and a ballot box. Next to it was a sign explaining that you were allowed to taste the "mystery beer" in the growler and make a guess at what it was. Preliminary clues were given, and you were allow to ask one "YES" or "NO" question of the host to help you figure out what it was:

SN850291.jpg

A domestic seasonal DIPA at 9.7% ABV. So I tasted it...it was very good, though I was pretty sure I had never had it before. The first person asked whether or not it was local--Answer: NO. I was trying to eliminate California, Colorado and Oregon with one fell swoop, so I asked if it was brewed west of the Rocky Mountains--Answer: NO. Other questions were whether or not it was fresh (YES), was it brewed north of the Mason-Dixon line (YES), etc. Thinking that I had eliminated the West Coast and with my understanding of the Mason-Dixon line ending in PA, I narrowed it down to NY/NE and guessed Smuttynose Big A IPA.

Later on in the party, the host asked me whether or not I thought I had guessed it. I explained my logic to him, and he said, "Well, since you guessed already, I'll tell you that the clue about the Rocky Mountains was misleading, since they run THROUGH Colorado. I'll also tell you that someone here brought the beer today." Looking around the room, I only saw three DIPAs (believe it or not): Surly Furious, Buckeye Brewing '76, and my Maharaja. Suddenly it clicked. I asked him if I had brought the beer and he started laughing. He said how worried he was when he saw me walk in with the bottle, thinking I'd run away with the prize for sure. After I had explained that I had never tried it before, he understood, but it was still pretty funny that the answer was in my hand all day and I never knew it, as the DIPAs were held 'till the end for some reason (Dark Lord, Abyss, GI BCS and a few other gems will do that, I guess).

OK, so maybe that story wasn't as amusing to you as it was to me, but since you've read this far, I guess I'll go ahead and I'll ask:

Who wants some beer?

Who wants some beer?
:D I do!! PM sent!
Wow...4 hours...I was beginning to think no one wanted my beer!

Got your addy in the PM, just need to know what kind of beer you like now. Help me narrow down the selection a bit.
Yeah, I was shocked to get home from work and see after 4 hrs nobody had responded! Maybe I'll go get a lotto ticket now too!!
Well, IPA,DIPA, Imperial anything, Porters, Stouts, Belgians, Hefe's are about the only thing I don't have in my fridge!

You slackers took 4 hours!

I was purposely avoiding this thread because I've already got quite a few care packages from Mike and I wanted somebody else to get a turn. I wasn't sure if I could resist if I kept checking.

Glad you like it, Ted. This was actually one of the more "non-Pennsylvania" selections I've sent out. I didn't want to keep sending the same stuff I had before, though. Gotta keep people on their toes. :) After getting a Racer 5 in my end of the Big Beer Blinder and having some Racer X on tap, I went out and bought a sampler case that included 3 each of the Racer 5, Hop Rod Rye, Big Bear Black Stout and Red Rocket. The Racer and Hop Rod are by far my favorite (Hops...go figure). The Nectar was by your request, and the Scratch #11 is actually an ESB. The entire Scratch Lineup can be found here. I paired it with a Yard's ESB for comparison, and well...the IPA and APA just jumped in the box. Legacy just started bottling the Hoptimus Prime this year after previously kegging it only for consumption at Union Jack's. I tasted it during Philly Beer Week, and as soon as the cases were released I jumped on it. Hope you enjoy that one. The Genny Bock is just fun. Padron '26 Maduros were the only mention you made in your profile, so I hope you don't mind one with a couple years of age on it (2005). The PINT GLASS, on the other hand...well, I had to do quite a bit of work for that. It's actually part of a "starter kit" for the Troegs "Art of Drinking Troegs" contest. It came complete with bottlecaps and some coaster art of previous winners. I earned that by suffering through an entire pint of Nugget Nectar on cask, so you damn well better appreciate it

Enjoy the beers and the cigar. Hopefully I didn't spoil the surprise when I posted in the "Recent Purchases" thread last week. I realized after the fact that it probably wasn't a good idea.

Bitterrat ...

Quite a nice selection ...

I'd love a box of beer.

C...
fourthrail, PM me with your addy and some ideas of beer you like, so I have an idea of what to look for style wise.
Mike you have set the bar high, I hope I can live up to what you and others have sent out!
Cheers
