Here's the latest on the Springfield, MO smoking ban. Been in effect about a year now. Several businesses have closed, etc. - the usual.

Voters filed a petition initiative which was certified.
Now all of a sudden, the people who started the ban are ready for a compromise! Imagine that.

Here's an update for those following this. Went to City Council, and they dropped it back on the voters at a tremendous cost to the taxpayer. Here's a link: http://ozarksfirst.com/fulltext?nxd_id=622632

I was at the meeting last night. It was disappointing, to say the least. They could have made some sensible exemptions but instead chose to saddle the city with an election which will cost almost $100k (when funds are precious right now and this is an unnecessary cost).

Politicians, especially at the local level, just aren't very smart.

The first step here was a City ordinance that allowed smoking in restaurants / bars that created an isolated area with "proper' ventillation. Then after many establishments spent the money to adhere to the new law, the law was changed to disallow smoking in all public places within the City limits. Many businesses closed. Some in the county have actually grown. Now they have passed a statewide law which for now doesn't change much, but it is the proverbial foot in the door. At least for now, the B&Ms here are a designated smoking area. I am certain eventually smoking anywhere in public will be illegal. I just hope I am dead and cold before it becomes illegal to enjoy my sticks at home.
