Otis has been by my side through thick and thin for over 13 years. But last night it was clear that he was ready for one last trip, this time to pass over the rainbow bridge. The vet will be coming by later this afternoon. Damn that's a tough decision to make, but it's the right thing to do. I'm going to miss him terribly. Please y'all hug your furry pals a little longer for the two of us today.

Worst thing I've had to do. I don't envy you, but I wish the best for you and Otis, have a safe journey Otis!

There's nothing harder than losing a loved family member. Take solace in the fact that his last moments will be with you. You will always have those fond memories with your best friend. I fear the day that I have to make that decision and hope that I have the fortitude to do what's best for my friend like you are.

Enjoy the last day with your friend the best you can. Never an easy decision to make. Safe travels Otis.

Sorry to hear it bro. This sucks and unfortunately is part of owning awesome dogs. Great looking pup.

Always tear up when I see this. So sorry for your loss, but as you said, it is the right thing to do sometimes and they truly know that as well!!

Never goodbye, it's until we meet again:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Very sad Michael, sorry for your loss. I feel your pain, all too well. I too just went through this, for TWO of my babies in less then a month. I'm still having a hard time with it :(

My heartfelt apologies Michael. Best wishes to you and yours.

Oh so sorry to read your post. I've had to make that decision twice so far and only a fellow pet owner knows how gut-wrenching it can be. Take solace and comfort in knowing that you two spent so much time as a part of each other's life.

That's really tough! I feel for you Michael! Not sure what I'm going to do when my own pets reach that age. I can only hope I have the same courage.

I feel for you. Great lasting memories.

Had to do the same last year. Heartbreaking decision. Thoughts are with you

Theres a children's book called The Heaven of Animals by Nancy Tillman. Yeah, its for kids, but its also the only book that ever made me weep openly in a bookstore.

Highly recommended for anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to a furry family member.

Sorry to hear this Michael. Definitely gonna hug my dog a little tighter tonight.
