I know everyone will think I’m trippin’, however here’s the story.
So my wife invited some friends to come over and have dinner with us yesterday. We always give them a choice of what they want, and out of several selections they chose meatloaf (I make a mean one…oh yeah). I also have an excellent recipe for the “gravy” I coat the meatloaf with as well as for smothering on the plate. Of course one of the key ingredients for both meatloaf and gravy is tomato sauce. I do love most anything with tomatoes. Lovely red tomatoes. Tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, whole tomatoes, you get the idea. One of, if not the ultimate tomato for me? Yep, sun grown tomatoes! I also decide to make one of our favorite deserts (from scratch I might add): RED velvet cake w/cream cheese icing.
So I get the cake layers done and cooling (keep in mind they're "red"), and also finish up the meatloaves (actually made two cause my wife can almost eat a whole loaf
) and slide them in the oven. Man the kitchen smells mighty good! I’ve got a little time now to let the cake cool and the meatloaf cook, so I go in search of a quick little smoke to have. Rummaging through the humi what do I come across? Ah ha ha ha! None other than a Rocky Patel Petite Perfecto….Sun Grown!!

Now I’ve already got tomatoes on my mind big time. I see this stick and of course am thinking sun grown tomatoes. The band is the color of tomatoes, even the stick is looking like the deep brown color of a sun grown tomato. Holy crap I cannot get tomato out of my frickin head!

So I do the punch and do a pre-draw. Oh man, there is just no way. I taste tomatoes. Go ahead, laugh. I sh!t you not, tomatoes. I put fire to it and whew, powerful strong first draw. Couple draws in…I’m tasting tomatoes. Sure there’s some woodiness and earth, but I distinctly get the taste of a sun grown tomato.
As mentioned, I love me some tomatoes, but I just couldn’t seem to really enjoy this smoke and put it down about halfway. I’m going to look into some psychotherapy, possibly hypnosis so I can get past the tomato thing.
Oh...our friends called and couldn't make it. They missed out on one fantastic dinner! And no, I didn't have it with sliced tomatoes. :laugh:
