This afternoon was overcast with a cool, strong breeze blowing. Wife got the baby girl to put her down for her afternoon nap, so I decided to go looking for a nice smoke to have out under the ‘ol walnut tree. Digging through the wineadors, I spied my box of loose RE’s and decided on a Por Larranaga Robusto (Asia release). I plucked it from the box and headed out to get comfy.

The sun did come in and out from the clouds and when it did, the oiliness of this stick really shown. Looking dark and rich with a very strong barnyard smell. The wrapper was quite coarse and the stick felt moist, giving a good bit when squeezed (just the way I like it). Decent enough cap, but looked as though someone did it in a hurry, and the foot showed it could possibly be overfilled. Once punched, pre-draw was tight however not plugged. Hopefully once lit the heat would open it up.

After putting fire to the foot, first draw was medium to full and deliciously spicy. No need to have worried about the draw as it was perfect for the strength of the smoke. After a few draws in, the smoke started to settle and I got tastes of old, worn leather with hints of cinnamon spice. Dark, sweet cocoa in the smooth and creamy smoke. Salt on the lips. Delicious! These flavors as well as the medium strength stayed consistent throughout. There was a very strong wind blowing, which wreaked havoc on the burn a time or two. At one point I heard a buzzing and noticed a June bug had somehow gotten stuck on it’s back, so I had to help it out. Got a snap or two of it before it flew off.

At about halfway, I adjourned to the back porch as a small rain cloud loomed over (but quickly went away). I finished the smoke up thoroughly enjoying the dark, rich flavors and excellent long finish. The skies partly cleared, and I got a few snaps of a hummingbird enjoying the feeder before heading in.

Nice snaps.

And it sounds like these are coming around perhaps. Upon release, they were almost, IMHO, unsmokeable due to wetness and just plain out rawness. Time to pull out another.

Excellent review.

I too think it's time to pull one out.

I was fortunate enough to smoke one of those. It was very good! Nice Review Greg!

Great pictures! This seems like a really nice cigar... I'm curious, if you don't mind me asking, did this cigar remind you of any others you have had? It sounds tasty!

The closest I can think of at the moment would be the Johnny-O! Robusto Extra I had a couple of days ago.

Thanks for another fantastic review. Brian previously suggested that we consider compiling your reviews and pinning them for reference. I think this is a great idea! Well done

Sweet pics and great review Greg! I love these! I too think it may be time to pull another. Fwiw, I am also in favor of pinning your reviews.

I have to say, the Johnny O Robusto Extra strangely reminded me of a Trinidad Ingenios.

Excellent review and of course pictures, you have a way with words that I can actually close my eyes and picture all of this happening.

Great and review and pics as usual Greg

My experience as well Wilkey. I had another one early in the summer and it had improved slightly, but to me, it just wasn't ready. Hopefully it improves withing another year or so...

Well Mike, thanks for saving a cigar from a premature demise. :D I'll hold off until the fall. This is one cigar that I think I'm going to have to drybox for a week or two prior to smoking. In my experience, PL's are among the Habanos that perform the worst at higher humidities.

Nice reveiw.

I'll have another in the fall, but I think it will be a while longer - at least the spring - before these really show a lot.

Thanks for the review and beautiful pics, Greg! I have one of these and am waiting for the right time to burn it. I'm glad that these appear to be coming around sooner rather than later.

Nice review, and terrific pics. I too smoked one of these a few months ago and have to concur that they are still too raw to really enjoy. It was definitely good, and I believe that as they settle down they will become wonderful cigars, but as of first quarter 2008 they were definitely in need of some rest. I'm planning to smoke another one in 9 months or so and see how they are at that point.

I love Por Larranaga Montecarlos. The brand is underappreciated im my opinion, no matter if they are partly machine made, the taste is still there.
