I’ve had these things for a while now and planned to let them sit for at least a year before smoking. Well, about ten months age is close enough. The cigar wrapper, dark and oily, was coarse and the cigar itself heavy in the hand. I hoped the heaviness was due to being damp and not overfilled. I gave the cigar a squeeze and only got a slight give. Looking at the foot, it seemed there may have been a little overfilling in this one. I punched the head and found the draw to be somewhat tight, however there was enough draw to get it going and hopefully to open up. I went ahead and clipped a little less than 1/4 inch off the head to see if that would help the draw. Nope.

Once lit, the first few draws were quite intense in body even with the difficult draw. I got a very dark earth flavor with medium to full strength smoke. Very smooth with a sweet saltiness on the lips. ¼ in the draw opened up and moist earth flavors came through in abundance. Black rich coffee, smooth with a hint of spiciness. Very earthy.

I did have to touch up the cigar a time or two due to some running, however nothing major. The ash was a whitish gray and dropped after about 1/3 in. I have to say this was a very good smoke with loads of rich, earthy flavors. I’m sure in another year or so, the tobacco will have blended together even more and this will turn into an absolutely excellent smoke.

I'm jealous...

Thanks for the great reviews antz. I have really enjoyed reading them and drooling over the wonderful pictures.

Excellent!

Looks like it was smoking a little on the hot side up to half way. ???

Actually it didn't burn hot at all...but you can see where I was having to do the touching up with the torch on the one side from running.

IMO I think these might be like the Hoyamids. Very tasty fresh, but after a few years, they lose a bit of the goodness

Hey there, Hal. Nice to see you here.

Have your Regalos started to lose that certain something already? They're still pretty young by El standards, no?

Greg, really fine review, as always!

I'm always grateful when you taste and review something I'm saving in the humi. It gives me an idea how they are maturing without having to burn one just yet!

Thanks!

Damn every time I read one of your reviews and look at the pics it makes me want to smoke NOW! lol, nice review Greg.

Have yet to try any of these and was wondering alittle while ago how they were coming along. Thanks for the review

Thanks for the review, Greg! Your reviews need to be compiled and turned into a pinned thread.

mmm... that really puts me in the mood for a good Hoyo de Monterrey! Try as I might, I can't name a better cigar of theirs than the Epicure No 2.
