It was another cloudy, dreary looking day. A slight breeze was blowing outside and every so often a drop of rain would come down. It won’t be long before the leaves start turning and the chore of raking will commence. You got to love fall! After a good hour or so of running and playing with the baby girl outside, the wife took her in for her afternoon nap, and I went digging in one of the humis for something to smoke.

I decided on a Tatuaje RC184. This cigar has a gorgeous presentation with silver foil covering half the cigar to the head. I love the shape of a salimone, tapered at both ends. The cigar felt quite hefty in the hand and only a slight give when squeezed. I cut a small piece of the head and found the draw quite tight, even with the tapered foot there should have been a slightly better draw. I cut a small amount more and still found the draw on the tight side, and decided to go ahead and light the foot to see if that would open it up any.

I put fire to the foot and sure enough I could get no smoke through even with a good effort of puffing. I went ahead and cut another piece off the foot and could see the bunching had a bit more of an opening, so put more fire to the foot and began puffing again. Not until the ash reached about a quarter inch did the cigar finally open up. Smoke began to flow well, and I began to reap the benefit of what this cigar had to offer. At first a good amount of black pepper spice hit the back of my throat causing a burning sensation, but not too bad. A really old, strong leather flavor came through with it that was really good.

After several draws, the spice died down to a perfect amount and a mixture of vanilla bean and roasted nuts came through. Smoke was pouring through effortlessly with a medium-full strength. I could detect notes of cedar wood along with the worn leather, vanilla bean, and toasted nuts with a long, lasting finish. The burn was razor sharp with the ash whitish gray in color. It fell on it’s own at a little over an inch revealing a dark gray ash within.

At about half way, the strength began to build and I was getting a pure, raw tobacco flavor as the core flavor. Rather strong, but good. I had to take slower, shorter draws towards the end as the power was really kicking. This was a very good smoke, however I didn’t feel it really knocked my socks off. I’ll have to pick up an RC 233 now, see what’s going on there.

Thanks for another one of your typically outstanding reviews, Greg! I'm glad to hear that you didn't find this over the top strong, as I've been wanting to try one of the RCs but have been worried about being knocked on my ass by the nicotine. My tolerance is increasing, but I am a bit embarassed to say that I was feeling tonight's 98 ERdM Lonsdale.

Nice review. I find the RC 183 quite mild in comparison to other Tats. It is mighty tasty though.

I'll save you the suspense on the 233.....more smoke, less taste IMO.

I was gifter one of these by a great guy and was lucky enough to smoke it about a week ago. I also had to cut a bit off the head to get a good draw and wait for the foot to burn past the lil nipple to really get the cigar to open up and enjoy the awesome flavours that it gave me. I sat out at the pool with a nice big cocktail for a couple hours and just relaxed with a great smoke.

O... And it's an RC184 ;) lol

Great review.

I wonder if you were enjoying anything to drink while smoking?

I also find some diffrence in times of day/meals, as I am sure we all do. You mentioned mid afternoon. I wonder if the body of this cigar, which I find to be hearty and peppery but not extreme in either, would be better suited after diner?

I would love to know your thoughts anyway.

Thanks.

Nice review and damn that is a sexy looking ashtray.

Nice review, bro!

It didn't spin my prop, either. But I'm not a big Tat fan so I didn't have high expectations. I like Pepin's more flavorful blends like his 601, Troya, and San Cristobal blends, to name a few. I thought the Tats were more in keeping with the JJ line - well made but mild. But I did enjoy the little corona and the Cojonu.

Another excellent review Greg, I really enjoy the RC184. Too bad it is just a bit spendy and pretty scarce, I think I might have to seek out another. Your presentation of the cigar and the ashtray, coupled with you fantastic photography has me sold on another.

Great review, I had to run out and smoke mine today!! That cigar was like the energizer bunny, it just keep going and going..... I have one of the big brother of the RC 184 tucked away in the coolie. I better put aside a whole weekend for that one.

Good review Greg!

I love these cigars. Everyone I've smoked has been very good, with a few being very sublime.
Time to start thinking about getting another box!

I actually had a late lunch (hot ham and swiss), so had eaten right before smoking. As Mark mentions, this is quite a long smoke and is perfect for a good afternoon with some time to kill. I'm not sure if after dinner would work for me as it'd probably be bed time by the end of it. Of course if I were a younger feller and stayed up late like I used to, it wouldn't be a problem. :D

I have no idea where I got 183 from, corrected now though. Thanks for the heads up on the 233 Wyatt (or is it 234?? ). I think I may still try one just to see, but won't be searching it out too heavily.

Do I even have to say nice review anymore? :D Nice review!

I just smoked my first of these about a week or so ago that I got in the MAWPIF and I thought it was fantastic! You're spot on with the flavors. Had to take the li'l princess a bath about halfway through and ended up putting it down for about 2 hours. Came back to it and I think it picked up better than it left off which is rare!
