I was so glad to see the sun come through the clouds this morning. Turned out to be a beautiful day other than a blustery autumn wind blowing. As Winnie the Pooh would say, “It’s a blustery day.” After working on getting some beef stew in the crock pot, I decided to take a break, have a smoke, and enjoy the sunshine.

I had already decided on the smoke I would have. A Partagas Serie D No. 3 EL 2001. I was lucky enough to pick up a couple of thses in a sampler not long ago and have really been looking forward to trying one. The cigar was box pressed and had just a little give when squeezed. It had a coarse, milk chocolate brown wrapper, however no prominent veins showing. I punched the head and found the draw to be perfect with good resistance, which was a huge relief as the cigar was very light in the hand. Cold draw had a bit of nuttiness and a taste of well aged, mature tobacco.

I torched the foot and the first whiffs of the forming smoke was incredible. I took a couple of small puffs to get the embers burning and once the smoke was there, I took a long, slow draw. Exhaling the smoke through the mouth and nose revealed a very strong coffee flavor with rich cream and a touch of sweetness. There was a perfect medium spice on the back of the throat with hints of cedar wood underneath. Notes of Cinnamon spice with cocoa was coming through in the incredibly delicious, medium strength smoke.

After smoking through about a quarter inch, the strength opened up to a medium-full, and I started getting tastes of raw honey and leather. The burn was perfect with a light gray wrapper ash, however the binder/filler ash was slightly darker. Tiny spots of tooth were visible as well. I finished up the cigar approximately one and a half hours later, thoroughly enjoying every single draw that I took. It was an exceptional smoke IMO, to the very nub. This was without a doubt the best Partagas I’ve had the pleasure of smoking. I’m really glad that I have another one of these and will definitely save it for a special occasion. Maybe the next weekend the sun is out! :D
