What a magnificent cigar, the Bolivar Double Corona RE. The construction was good with a chocolate brown wrapper that was slightly coarse and had a nice oily sheen. I was a little disappointed that the bands weren’t on the cigar as it enhances the visual aspect; however the smoking is the true experience.

I punched the cap and found the draw spot on with a taste of good tobacco. With the foot torched, I took a couple puffs and then a slow long draw revealing true Bolivar flavors of rich, sweet black coffee, chocolate caramel and a dark earth undertone. Hints of black licorice and a dark roasted nut came through as well with a perfect amount of pepper spice on the back of the throat.

I found a good medium strength in the very smooth and creamy smoke with an absolutely delicious long finish that was quite lasting. The burn was perfect with a nice gray ash forming; however I let it sit too long between draws and had to re-light at about a half-inch in. Tons of smoke flowed once re-lit.

A third in and rich, black coffee and chocolate flavors continued with a pronounced dark, roasted nut in the mix. There was also a delicious freshly baked bread taste lathered in a creamy butter. Sheer heaven! I take slow, long draws and exhale the creamy smoke through my nose, relishing the incredible flavors. The burn continued to be sharp with a strong ash that I knocked off at about every inch.

The final third I had a problem keeping the fire going and after ashing the cigar I saw why. There was a small tunnel down the center of the ash; however after about a half inch the fire was burning good again. This was an absolutely fantastic smoke with incredible flavors and a wonderfully long lasting finish. It is also, without a doubt, one hell of a long smoke! :D I can say I certainly had my fill by the time I got to the end. I’d love to have a box of these, cut them all in half, and have a cab of coronas RE!

You're out of control with all these reviews lately.

Another great one though. You should be given your own section in some cigar mags.

Bolivar has gotten a bit of a bad rep with its RE offerings (and I'm not here to defend them). But this and the Simones are worth the price of admission.

Otherwise, buy BCE cabs and you'll experience all the goodness that comes from this marca.

EDIT: The Libertadores is also a very good cigar...but its large format will need time to shine!

I've had a few of the Colosales that were downright fantastic. Those Libertadores are looking really good too, but I'm letting them sit for a while for rest and relaxation. :D

I don't want to distract folks more than I have already, but the Colosales really seemed to be watered down to my Bolivar taste. That said, all of them will be wildly sought after in 10 years!

Nice review Greg, looks like a great cigar. I'll tell you what, you have a knack for toasting the foot ha. I can never get a foot as perfectly toasted as you do lol.

I also wondered, where did you get your swiss army knife cigar punch tool? The multiple size punches seem like a good idea.

Great review, but I could have sworn I was smoking a Hoyo DC when I had one. I wasn't impressed with it and like Rob said, cabs of CE's are a great way to experience what Bloivar has to offer.

Greg,

As always great review!! I agree with you 100% this stick is great!!

My first one came from Amazon.com, then the second off fleabay after losing the first one. Then, the second I lost one of the ring blades and returned it to Victorinox to be replaced and it got lost in the mail. But, they did offer to sell me one at half-price which was the actual full price I paid originally. Amazon is about the lowest price I've seen at about $48.

Greg, until this review, I'd never heard of a Middle East Regional release.
Are these no longer made or hard to come by?

I'm sure some of the more learned brethren can answer better, however I do believe these were a one time release in '07. There's still some out there, a little pricey, but what RE's aren't. :D

Nice review Greg

My favorite Bolivar RE, although I enjoyed the Libertadors and the last Colosales I had very much. The DC was released in 2007 and was not re-relased to my knowledge this year. 6000 boxes were made I believe and they are fairly expensive, imo ($4-500 per box of 25).

Greg nice review. I am *really* glad to see you reviewing the sticks you grabbed from the pass so soon, that is what cigars are meant for!

Wow, this looks like it made my top list to try, since Bolivar is my favorite marca anyways. I also agree, the Simones was one of the best Bolivars I've ever had, and this was my only RE I've had from Bolivar. I can't wait to try the Libertadores, Colosales, this Double Corona, and the new Shorts from '08...if I can get my hands on them!!!

Thanks for the fantastic review Greg.
