Nice looking cigar with a maduro color wrapper and plenty of oils glistening. It’s very coarse with one prominent vein running the length and very firm when squeezed. I seemed to have left my punch knife on the dresser and didn’t feel like going back in, so clipped the head with my Palio. There’s a good resistance in the draw, possibly a tad bit on the tight side, but good nonetheless.

I put fire to the foot and away we go! First draw is a very mild body with no spice to be found. I’m not getting much flavor out of the smoke either, just a mild tobacco taste to begin with, however after a good half-inch in I start getting faint notes of earth, wood, and maybe toasted nuts. There’s a bittersweet taste on the lips as well, not entirely unpleasant.

The burn is sharp with a medium gray ash forming that is loose and flaky. Plenty of smoke is being produced and continues to be a mild-medium body with tastes of earth and leather with a hint of nuts, maybe a smidgen of cocoa coming through as well. The finish is very short and not too bad on the palate.

Halfway in and the burn continues to be sharp with a loose, flaky ash. There’s a small amount of white pepper spice on the back of the throat. The smoke is still mild to medium and there’s just not much by way of flavor coming through. Small hints of earth and leather with some nuttiness that I can only describe as somewhat lacking. I find nothing in the finish, a somewhat bitter aftertaste coming through.

I have to admit, things didn’t change much in the end. Good burn, flaky ash, flavors just not working out well at all with a sort of bitterness in the aftertaste. I started to put it down at about two inches but kept going, then finally letting it go at about an inch. I have to admit, this was not a good cigar for me.

Greg, you have the ability of finding the 'right way' to describe a cigar's taste profile. I have not smoked an entire Gran Anniversario yet, but simmsboard (Joe) allowed me to take a few drags off of his. My three-drag description of that cigar would be "a very refined 858 sungrown". It might be difficult for a person to put 'aged tobacco' into words, but that cigar was it. Anyway, whatever that means.

I agree completely with your analysis. I did not enjoy my 8-5-8's either. You are more of a trooper than me, couldn't take it down that far. Just to bitter for me. :( :(

Thanks for an honest review Greg. I haven't tried one yet, but I trust your taste. Great pix.

I had a box of these from 2002, and that box didn't last long. I smoke a couple 07's as well, and they were lacking much. But the ones from 2002 were absolutely amazing! My opinion with these smokes was that they just needed some age.

Hmmm...I'm going to fire up an OR 858 soon to see if it's any different than the '06. Very curious to see...

That's what I'm saying man, and with some age they really transform into an interesting and unique experience.

My question is how long are these babies aged before they hit the market? Like how long do they sit in Fuente aging chamber? Or are they not?

David

edit to say: After a little research on Vitolas.net. It has been stated "So the current shipments of 858 SGs are aged a number of years right out of the box." (citation: Andrew AKA (moki)) Here is the big dawg question, is another year really going to make much of a difference? I mean lets take for an example you smoke an AF 858 sungrown today stating it is not very good. Then a year later from the same batch you smoke one, and state that it was amazing. My question to everyone is, how in the world can you compare two of the same smokes from the same box and same year, a year apart from each other. To make things even more interesting what you eat before smoking the 858 now and one year from now will make a big difference as well.

It seems that the common answer has to do with aging the sticks, to the reason why the stick is so much better a year from now. These babies are already aged, they should be good right out of the box. This is not saying that every stick should not be aged, because alot of them do improve with a little bit of age. But how much age, can really make a difference? If anything it is certainly a subjective question. I personally believe it may of just been a "dud". I am up for many responds and discussion regarding this topic.

Wow. Sorry to hear you didn't like it. Personally, I love them. For you guys in here who don't like yours, and wish to sell, let me know.

I have a box from '02 and a box from '07 and to me they taste very similar. I guess they should considering they are the same cigar but I probably couldn't tell the two apart if I smoked them blind. Both are excellent cigars, probably my favorite. It sucks that they are so hard to come by these days and if you do find them you definitely pay for them.

A couple of weeks ago, stogieman gifted me one of these from 2004. We were at our Thursday night herf at Schlesinger's. I was excited to smoke this cigar because I had not had one before. It was medium bodied as Greg describes. I found a nice sweetness, probably from the wrapper, combined with some slight citrus flavors along with a nice tobacco taste.. I nubbed this cigar and had absolutely no bitterness. Good flavor in the back of the mouth. I really enjoyed this smoke. Admittedly, my sample size is small; so, I need to smoke MORE of these.
