I’m sure you can imagine the look on my face when I opened a box received from Jeff (Jlada) and found this cigar (amongst others) inside. An actual Bolivar Churchill Tubo! Great googly moogly whoda thunk it! Of course, it’s been sitting in my winedor long enough, so time to put some fire to this bad boy.

I felt like an archeologist just opening an undiscovered tomb when opening this thing up. I slid the behemoth cigar out and found it to be in perfect shape. The wrapper is golden brown in color, smooth with small veins throughout, and I believe there’s still some oiliness to it. It feels rather light in the hand and has a good bit of give when squeezed. I punch the cap and find it to have perfect resistance in the draw.

I torch the foot and take a few puffs, then a good first draw. I used to when I was very young, spend a good bit of time at a tobacco farm that was near our house. They had tobacco barns where they would take the fresh picked tobacco and hang it on tobacco sticks all the way to the top of the barn. There would be fires burning to heat the barn and cure the tobacco. I can remember distinctly the incredibly rich, sweet smell of the curing tobacco when I would step inside. This is what I got from this Bolivar; an incredibly rich, sweet straightforward tobacco.

The first third produced this straightforward tobacco taste, and I will say there was a lot of power in this smoke with strong, black pepper spice. It seemed it wanted to have the usual Bolivar profile, but then it seemed completely different as well. I did get a nice nuttiness and hint of cocoa, but there was a taste of what I would describe as raw soybean. Not bad at all, actually very good, but very different.

The burn was sharp with a strong, mottled dark and light gray ash that had noticeable tooth. I made the mistake of knocking the ash off with my finger, causing a fairly nice crack in the wrapper. The last third of the smoke actually picked up in flavor and did take on a more typical Bolivar profile of cocoa and rich, toasted nuts. However, the final inch or so got hot and bitter with the smoke taking on a supercharged fullness. Wow was this thing powerful at the end.

Thanks so much Jeff for this smoke. I definitely owe you! ;)

The only thing better then your review and that cigar was the wonderful picture of your great daughter.

You live a blessd life my friend.

Greg even though you love punching your cigars you may want to remember to not take it so literally. I mean if you hit the thing it can't even hit you back, not really fair imo.

I agree. You should vent some of that frustration over at mybrute.com. imo.

The picture of your daughter is priceless! She reminds me of my beautiful neice. Looks like an excellent smoke, and a great review as always! Thanks Greg!

Great review Greg! I've had one of these before, and I must say, your review is spot on with the review I gave my '97 (even down to the crack! ;) ). Glad you enjoyed it.
