My good friend Andrew (Ludwig) hit me with a fantastic bomb a couple of months ago, and included was this cigar. I have read numerous times where the Cuban people can’t smoke the good stuff, but instead have to smoke the lower end tobacco. This is one of the local smokes from Guantanamo and per Andrew, came in bundles wrapped in brown paper.
I will definitely say this is one rough looking cigar. The wrapper is a medium brown in color, has a slight oiliness, and very coarse with patchwork looking veins throughout. From the head to about halfway, the cigar feels semi-firm, however from halfway to the foot it’s extremely soft and spongy. I can pretty much flatten the foot with very little effort. The cigar has a faint musty/sour smell to it, not good but not bad either.
I punch the cap and find the draw is spot on with a perfect resistance, which is surprising as I was expecting either it to be plugged or way loose. So far so good! I’m really not sure how to describe the taste in the cold draw other than fairly close to the smell, musty/sour. I torch the foot and it doesn’t take any time at all to get the tobacco burning good. First draw produces a ton of smoke that is actually very mild in body with just a hint of spice. I’m getting a taste of vanilla up front with a sort of nuttiness somewhere underneath. There’s no complexity at all in this smoke, but very simple in taste, and I am detecting that musty/sourness on the lips and mainly while exhaling.
The burn was very rough going to one side each time ashed. At the halfway mark, a tunnel appeared and it became difficult to keep the cigar lit. After a minute or so of puffing, the cigar started to burn okay again with the burn continuing to be rough. I’m still getting some vanilla with a hint of a cinnamon type spice and the body quite mild to my palate. There’s a decent enough finish after exhaling.
This wasn’t a fantastic cigar, however not all that bad either. The burn was fairly rough with loose ash, yet the draw was very good and plenty of smoke produced. I didn’t find any complexity at all, but more of a straightforward tobacco. Thank you Andrew for giving me the opportunity to sample this. Much appreciated!
