(07/14/09) It’s a hot, lazy afternoon. Luckily, a really nice breeze is blowing that helps with the mid 90 degree temperature. The sky is an absolutely beautiful hue of blue with only a spot of cloud here and there. June bugs are zipping by, slamming on the side of the house, stupid bugs. I decide to sit back and relax with this H. Upmann Super Corona and just enjoy the day.

This is one old looking cigar with medium brown wrapper, prominent veins, and no oils that I can see. It seems a little light in the hand, and has a slight give up until right around the band where there’s a rock hard spot. I punch the cap and of course, it has to be plugged. Damn. I can barely get any air flowing at all.

I go ahead and light the foot and once burning well, try to take a couple of draws. Smoke comes through; however it’s taking a great deal to get it out. I find it very mild, which is probably due to the overly tight draw. What flavor I am getting is that of worn leather, old oak wood, and roasted nuts, however there’s also a bitterness coming through that has a steel/metal taste.

Instead of opening up as I was hoping it would do, the draw all but completely closed up. I grabbed one of my draw tools and pushed it through to about half way. As usual, it seems as if it may help, but ends up doing nothing at all really. I just can’t get anything out of it.

I push on and get a good inch of medium gray ash; however, I don’t think I’m going to go much longer as it’s just not smoking well at all. What a shame as this is the first, possibly the last, H. Upmann SC I’ll try. I hit it a few more times with the draw tool, and actually get a decent draw of smoke that teases me with what this cigar could be. But alas, the draw still is much too tight, and my pulling more just makes it hot and rather bitter. I’m getting a pear taste on the palate. I like pears, but not all that much in cigar smoke.

I finally reach the halfway mark, and as I draw on the cigar I squeeze it both with my teeth and fingers to try and loosen up the tobacco. It works! Smoke begins to flow really well giving me a good spice on the back of the tongue with really rich flavors of black coffee, leather, wood, and dark roasted nuts. The smoke itself is a good medium in body that leaves a nice, lasting finish on the palate after exhaling slowly.

Unfortunately, towards the end, the draw tightened up on me to where I was getting minimal smoke through again. It got quite hot and bitter, so I finally put it down with probably a good inch and a half left. I hate that this cigar was plugged as there’s no doubt it would’ve been an excellent smoke. Ah well, you win some and you lose some.
