Another cool morning at 61F on the back porch. I almost put on a sweatshirt, but it actually feels good with no breeze blowing. There’s a mocking bird right inside the edge of the woods that’s very upset about something getting close to its nest, making far too much racket for it being this early. I know it’s not my cat Tinker as he’s sitting on the back deck, looking towards all the fuss. There’s the culprit. A squirrel, and now its making a huge racket too. I go ahead and take a few pictures of the PL, and by the time I get back to my seat the noise had stopped.

This is one of the most oily cigars I’ve seen, feels like the oil is coming off on my fingers. The wrapper looks like milk chocolate, has prominent veins throughout, and slightly coarse with a blotchiness from head to foot. It’s still rather damp and has a hefty weight in the hand with sponginess when squeezed. Unfortunately, the sponginess stops about an inch down from the tapered head where it is rock solid hard. I clip the cap and sure enough, plugged. No air coming through at all. I really don’t want to clip an inch off, so grab one of my draw tools and after a few minutes of poking and prodding, I have airflow! The taste I’m getting in the cold draw is fresh, raw tobacco with a hint of cocoa.

I put fire to the foot and am already expecting the cigar to probably have a not so good burn due to it being so fresh/damp still. It actually lights quite easily and there’s plenty of smoke produced as I take a couple puffs to get the embers going good. A couple of long draws, and I’m getting a rather mild, sweet spiciness on the back of the tongue with a mild to not quite medium strength, which is probably due to the draw still having too much resistance. The smoke is quite rich and oily on the palate with delicious flavors, that of semi-sweet chocolate, cinnamon, and dark, moist earth with a hint of worn leather.

The burn is actually doing well, being very sharp with a medium to dark gray ash forming that is compact, holding strong until tapped off in the ashtray. I’m having a tough time with the draw as its still tight, and use the draw tool a couple more times to try and loosen it up as much as possible. I have to take a few good puffs and then a very slow, long draw to pull a good amount of smoke through, which works well enough.

At about halfway in, I’m getting a good medium strength smoke with mild spice continuing to hit the back of the throat. Flavors are as previously described with what seems like a light roasted nuttiness coming through as well, the smoke coating the tongue with oily goodness. There’s a very nice, lasting finish left on the palate after exhaling, with the smoke tingling the nostrils. The burn stays sharp with a strong, dark gray ash forming.

Passing the halfway mark, the draw wants to get even more tight, which I find odd as usually closer to the end it will loosen. I continue to use the draw tool to keep it open well enough to get smoke through, which is a bit aggravating but worth it as the smoke is so rich and simply delicious.

This was indeed a fantastic smoke, even though its still quite young. A sharp burn, fantastic flavors, and lasting finish made for a thoroughly enjoyable smoke. Of course, I had to do more work than I liked to try and keep the draw open, but as mentioned it was well worth it. I have no doubt that with sufficient down time, these will turn out to be absolutely incredible cigars. Excellent smoke!

Great review. I really enjoy the PL flavor profile. I have yet to try any of their RE's but the ones I've had were great.

Nice review. For a cigar to provide a good smoking experience after that much work really says a lot. Thanks for the review.
