Man am I glad Friday is finally here. It has been one heck of a long week, ready for a couple days off for sure. I got home and decided to really sit back and relax with a good sized cigar, so picked out an Anejo No. 48. The maduro wrapper is dark and oily with one prominent vein running the length. It has a hefty weight in the hand, very firm when squeezed, and with the cap punched I find a draw with just a little too much resistance and tastes of cocoa and coffee bean.
I get the foot lit and burning well, then take a few puffs to get the smoke flowing. Again, the draw is somewhat on the tight side, so am having to take a fairly hard draw to get good smoke out, however it does flow well enough with a nice mild spice on the back of the throat with the smoke itself rather mild as well. Flavors are that of rich, sweet cocoa, worn leather, and dark earth with the finish really good upon exhale but not very lasting.
The burn leans to one side fairly sharply with a medium gray, compact ash forming that holds well until tapped off in the ashtray. After ashing, I go ahead and touch-up the non-burning side to get it back even again. I’m just not able to get much through the draw as it seems to tighten even more at about a third in, so I go ahead and clip off about a quarter inch from the head hoping that would help, however it doesn’t. Now that the tobacco has warmed and softened a bit, I can feel a rock hard spot about halfway up the cigar as well as most of the area at the band on up towards the head. As the fire gets closer towards the halfway mark, I’m able to squeeze the tobacco to try and loosen it up inside, which does work as I’m able to get a good draw of smoke through afterwards. Flavors are consistent as before with the spice picking up slightly to a mild-medium with the strength following suit. The finish is starting to become somewhat lasting with that nice twang that I really love in the Anejo line.
After getting through the halfway mark, the burn remained sharp the rest of the way with a perfect draw pulling through good medium strength smoke that was rather thick on the palate and the spice remaining a mild to medium. Flavors continued to be consistent, that of rich, sweet cocoa and black coffee with worn leather and dark earth. I’d say the last third was the real sweet spot for this smoke with the finish long on the palate and that nice twang coming through.
This smoke lasted late into the evening with the crickets having started their nightly singing. Definitely a nice, relaxing time.
