When it rains it pours. Had a root canal done yesterday, and today the wife calls me at work saying she just sliced her finger, so I rush home, get her to the doctor, and she ends up with 8 stitches. Did I say she’s blind in one eye and can’t see out the other? Seriously, like she should be slicing potatoes with my big, razor sharp knife. Sheesh. After getting back home, I decided it was time for a glass of scotch and a good cigar, so poured a dram, grabbed an RYJ, and headed out the back door.

The wrapper on this cigar is dark, reddish brown with not much oil, and a rough looking prominent veins running the length. Towards the head there is even a piece of stem sticking out. It feels firm when squeezed, has a decent weight in the hand, and after punching the cap I find the draw slightly loose with a really good, earthy tobacco taste coming through.

I toast the foot well and then blow on the embers to get the burn even, take a few puffs to get the smoke flowing good, and then a long draw. There’s a perfect spiciness on the tongue and throat with the smoke a medium strength and the body quite full, very smooth. Flavors are very rich with tastes of dark earth, leather, and what I would describe as a floral, the finish very lasting on the palate.

A third in and halfway through, the burn is sharp with a medium to dark gray ash forming. Medium to almost full strength smoke is pouring through the semi-loose draw in huge amounts, is quite smooth and cool on the palate, with flavors continuing to be incredibly rich. I take a long pull on the cigar and ever so slowly let the fine smoke flow from my nostrils, which tingles from the spice.

In the final third the strength and body is definitely at full with flavors becoming even more intense, rich, and lasting on the palate. I definitely love the RYJ profile and this was an excellent example of what one should be. Absolutely enjoyed this cigar down to the nub!
