We had a down pour earlier with no lightning or thunder; however after about an hour of the sun coming back out, another black cloud loomed in the distance. Within minutes the wind was whipping rain sideways and in a blinding flash of lightning and sonic boom of thunder, our power went out. The storm left as soon as it came, yet the power is still not on, so I decided to pour a dram of Glenfiddich, grab one of the SP 2 received in the “Steenking” box split, and got comfy on the back porch to smoke.
The cigar has a reddish brown wrapper with noticeable oil and several small, patchwork veins throughout. It has a good weight in the hand, is very firm when squeezed, and what looks like possible over filling in the foot. I clip off a small piece from the head and am unable to get any air to flow through, so clip off another piece and with my second try find the draw tight, however this time able to get a small amount of air through.
I torch the foot and blow on the embers, watching the orange glow spread throughout, and then take several puffs trying to get the smoke flowing. My first draw is that of mild smoke, which I ascertain is due to the tight draw not allowing sufficient smoke through. Slowly exhaling through mouth and nose, I’m not able to pick up a huge amount of flavor. What I can detect is rich vanilla and citrus notes with a hint of toasted nuts, possibly bread.
A third in and the burn is sharp with a medium to dark gray ash forming that holds strong. I have to take several good puffs on the cigar and then a long draw to get a good amount of smoke through, and this is working well enough. The smoke still seems quite mild with a slight oiliness left on the palate, flavors are rich and as previously described. There’s a delicious finish left after exhaling slowly and is somewhat semi lasting.
Heading into the halfway mark, I still have to puff a number of times before taking a long draw; however the smoke is now more of a medium in strength with a nice spiciness coming through. Flavors are very good, rich and creamy vanilla, citrus and toasted nuts with a lasting finish. That wonderful Partagas profile coming through as I slowly exhale through my mouth and nose.
Into the final third, I roll the cigar a bit between my fingers to hopefully loosen up the tobacco and open the draw more, and it does work to an extent. The smoke now seems to be a good medium in strength with excellent spice coming through. Flavor continues to be rich with the familiar Partagas profile, the finish long on the palate. If not for the over resistant draw, this would have been an absolutely excellent smoke with sharp burn, rich flavors, and lasting finish. I know the rest of these will have a good bit more down time on them before another is lit up.
