It is an absolutely gorgeous day with a deep blue sky, nice breeze blowing, and birds singing all around. The temperature gauge is reading 85F with the humidity at 34%, so not bad at all in the shade of the back porch. My cat is stretched out under one of the chairs and Mandy, well she’s found a nice spot of dirt in the back yard which my wife will raise cane about since she’s the one that usually washes her (white dog/dirt do not go well together). I went digging for a smoke to enjoy on such a beautiful day and in one of the singles boxes I came across one of the RA Phoenicia received in the “We Don’t Need No Steenking Name” box split back in September last year. I love a sublime size cigar, and this one is gorgeous with a medium to dark brown, semi-oily wrapper, prominent veins, and nice triple cap on top. The weight in the hand feels just right and there’s a slight sponginess when squeezed, which makes me think maybe I ought to let it dry box for a while before firing up. <pause> Nah. I punch the cap and find the draw absolutely perfect with a taste of straightforward tobacco, maybe just a hint of mustiness.

And so I begin the process of putting fire to the foot, starting in the center, and then slowly moving outwards in circles. I stop long enough to blow the embers, and then start the process over again until I’m satisfied with the burn, which didn’t take long at all. The smoke already coming up from the burning foot has a sweet, delicious smell in the nose. I take a few quick puffs, do a slight touch up just around the edges of the foot to make sure the burn is nice and even, then take a slow, long draw. Spice hits the back of the tongue and throat perfectly with the smoke a medium to almost full strength, but nothing over powering. Oh wow, the flavors coming through are incredibly rich and the smoke oh so smooth right from the start. I’m having a difficult time discerning what I’m tasting, just deeply complex and again, incredibly rich.

A third in, and I am completely enthralled with this cigar and how down right good it is. The burn is razor sharp with a medium gray ash forming that is not compact, but not flaky either. I find the strength of the smoke has somewhat mellowed to right at medium with the spice still at a perfect amount. The complexity of flavors coming through is amazing to my palate and what I can pick out is a dark, rich coffee, earth, cedar wood, and a hint of sweet cocoa. There’s also a tad bit of mustiness in the finish that is lasting on the palate.

Unfortunately at the halfway mark, the burn started running to one side pretty badly and did mess up the smoking; however with a good bit of puffing and purging I was able to get it back on track well enough. The smoke, medium in strength, continued to flow well through the perfect draw with good spice still hitting the back of the tongue and throat. Flavors remained rich and delicious as previously described with a long, lasting finish on the palate after exhaling slowly through the mouth and nose.

Into the final third, I continued to have burn issues that made it difficult to really enjoy the cigar. I was getting plenty of medium strength smoke flowing through, but in between having to do all the puffing and purging was simply aggravating. It remained this way through to the end, which was unfortunate as I’m sure I would have thoroughly enjoyed every last inch. If not for the burn issues, this would have been one very amazing cigar to say the least!

It sucks the burn issues detracted from your experience, Greg. I'd like to try one soon as well. Maybe this weekend. I can't believe we got those almost a year ago already...
