Smoked July 4th morning...

With plans to cookout some burgers stuffed with blue cheese, chipotles, and sun-dried tomatoes, I decided I had better do some cleaning on my grill. Now I knew it was in pretty bad shape from having had it for about eight years, however didn’t realize how bad until I started taking off the burner covers, after which everything pretty much disintegrated. Seems the drippings/build-up was actually holding the innards together. So, I take off in search of hopefully parts to fix it back up, but unfortunately nowhere in town had any, and I ended up buying a new one.

July 4th morning I get up and head out with coffee and the Los Blancos Sumatra (received from Andy) to put the new grill together. The cigar has a medium brown wrapper with slight oil and one prominent vein running the length. It’s firm when squeezed with no soft spots to be found, has a good weight in the hand, and after punching the cap I find a perfect draw with what seems like a bit of musty tobacco coming through.

The foot lights easily with smoke pouring from the fire with a rich smell in the nose. I take a couple puffs; let it rest for a bit, take a couple more and then a long draw. There’s a nice spice on the back of the tongue and throat, more of an herbal spice than a pepper. The strength is a good medium with the body somewhat light on the palate, very smooth I must say. Flavors aren’t rich as I found in the Nine or Criollo, but simply a straightforward tobacco that is really downright good.

About a third in, the burn is razor sharp with a light to medium gray ash forming that holds strong, the smoke continuing to be a good medium strength and flowing well through the perfect draw. I’m trying to work on putting the grill together, however keep finding myself pausing to focus on this cigar and really enjoy it. The spice and flavor is consistent with my previous description, just a really good straightforward tobacco taste that isn’t overly rich, but plain old good. I will say that it did have an herbal quality in the somewhat lasting finish.

Halfway and into the final third, the burn remained sharp with a strong ash that I kept knocking off while working on the new grill. I have to say that as I finished up the cigar, it was consistent as in the beginning with really good straightforward tobacco flavor that was actually nice for a change. Very good cigar!
