Stepping out on the back porch, my glasses immediately fog up from the moisture in the air. It is somewhat cool with a slight breeze that feels nice, however the sun has already made its way above the tree line, meaning it won’t be long before it heats up again. I have to admit though, it’s definitely a beautiful morning with crickets still singing along with the wind blowing through the trees; quite relaxing. There are several different butterflies flittering all around the back step, my cat Tinker watches them with his tail twitching back and forth. He crouches down low ready to pounce; however the butterflies move away as if they know his intentions.

This morning I decided to try one of the RA ??? received in the latest round from the “Steenking” box split. There’s one prominent vein running the length of the oily looking Colorado shade wrapper. I’m thinking it could be overfilled, damp, or possibly a combination of both as it feels overly heavy in the hand and slightly spongy when squeezed. I clip a small amount off the tapered head and test the draw, finding it with far too much resistance, so clip off a small amount more that opens it up enough to get air through, but still more resistance than I like. Taste in the cold draw is of straightforward fresh tobacco.

The foot lights easily and bluish white smoke is pouring from the newly formed embers. I move the foot back and forth under my nose to get a whiff of the smoke, and find it smells really good. A couple quick puffs and I’m pleased to find tons of smoke pouring through, so take a long draw. Mild to not quite medium spice hits the back of the tongue and throat, the smoke also a mild to medium; however the body is more medium to almost full. The flavor is good, somewhat vegetal, but not very rich in taste, and has a slight bitterness to it. It leaves a decent finish on the palate; however not very lasting.

Through the first inch, the burn was even enough with a rugged looking medium gray ash that held on until tapped off in the ashtray, a slight coning was left with the coal dark. The smoke flowed well through the perfect draw and moved up to right at medium in strength with good spice still hitting the palate just right. Flavors continued to be very good and what I would still describe as vegetal with a hint of sweetness, the bitterness that was there in the beginning now gone. Not much to say regarding the finish, which remains good yet not lasting at all.

Reaching the halfway point and moving into the final third, the burn is sharp with a strong ash, and the smoke continues to flow well through the perfect draw, however has intensified to an almost full strength with the spice picking up in strength as well. There’s not much to say regarding the flavor or the finish. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad at all, however not what I would expect from such a cigar. I would definitely say there’s some much needed downtime on these for the tobaccos to fully marry and hope that in time they will come around.

Greg - i've had the same experience as you with the '10 release. I've probably smoked these with some inherent bias, though, as the '05 RA Belicoso UK edition is one of my favorite smokes.

Nice review, Greg. I'll take your advice and let them sit for a while.

Thanks for the review Greg. The 3 lost weeks between Germany and NY definitely haven't helped these.

A young thang!

The only regionals I've had were a bit mild in flavor. They were too young, too.
