Although the temperature is cool out, it feels nice sitting in the warm morning sun. It’s quiet except for the sound of crows cawing far off in the woods and what sounds like a fairly large owl giving its low, deep hoot. Mandy (my Jack Russell) comes out with me and heads to her warm, cozy spot on the side of the house where the sun comes up. An absolutely beautiful start to what will most definitely be a wonderful day.

This morning I decided to put fire to the Monte No. 4 received from JL, a very rare treat to be sure and cannot thank him enough for sending. This cigar has been very well taken care of as it looks to be in excellent condition; smooth dark brown wrapper that has an oily sheen when held in the sunlight and tiny patchwork veins throughout. It feels somewhat light in the hand, has a very slight give when squeezed with no soft spots to be found, and after carefully punching the cap I find the draw absolutely perfect with a distinct musty tobacco taste coming through.

I toast the foot black and then begin to light the cigar with a slither of cedar wood, turning it slowly until orange embers are glowing throughout, and the smoke wafting up to my nose smells incredible. I take a couple quick puffs that produces an abundance of white smoke, and after letting it rest for a bit I take my first long, slow draw. There’s spice that I would describe as medium, but not a powerful medium as it is oh so smooth on the back of the tongue and throat. The strength of the copious amount of smoke is medium to almost full with the body absolutely full; thick and slightly heavy on the palate. As I exhale slowly through mouth and nose, the flavors are incredibly rich and complex with tastes of wood and leather and what seems to be a hint of black licorice.

Heading into halfway the burn is sharp with a mottled black and gray ash forming that is somewhat loose; however holds just long enough for me to get a picture in. The spice continues to be medium, hitting the back of the tongue and throat just right and the smoke itself medium to full, flowing smoothly in billowing white plumes through the perfect draw. The body is like none other I’ve experienced, completely full and simply incredible. At exactly halfway the fire goes out; however with a quick torching comes right back to life. Flavors are consistent and seemingly complex with the finish absolutely amazing, lasting long after exhaling. A little after the halfway mark, the cigar went out again. It was rather strange too as I was puffing on it with smoke pouring through and then suddenly it was out cold. I ashed the cigar expecting to see tunneling; however there was none to be found.

Through the final third I had to sip on the cigar as there was just so much smoke being produced that a full draw would be overpowering, more so because the strength of the smoke and spice both had definitely kicked up to full. I can’t say enough of how much I thoroughly enjoyed this cigar with sharp burn, perfect draw, and absolutely amazing, complex flavors that lasted long in the finish. Thank you again JL for the opportunity to sample such a fine cigar!

Wow! Looks like it even has that wonderful, perfectly hemispherical "marble head" on it too. They don't make 'em like they used to! Thanks for sharing!

At least I must say the day did look delightful and the photos were great. You made me feel as if I were right there with you. Enjoyed your review.

Thanks for the review!
It's good to know this Monte #4 from the 70s can still have complex and rich flavor.
