My baby girl came home with a very nasty stomach flu Friday a week ago and of course the wife got it next and then myself, so it’s been a little while since I’ve been able to enjoy a good smoke. Fortunately they’re feeling much better and this morning I woke up nowhere near as sick, thank goodness! I decided to have a smoke this afternoon, so went looking for something a bit on the mild side and picked out a Fonseca Invictos from I believe ’99. Should do the trick.

The tissue wrapping the cigar had a slight yellow tint from age, and after removing it I found the wrapper to have a dull brown color with not much by way of oil. There was a good weight in the hand with the cigar extremely firm when squeezed, and after clipping the cap I found no airflow at all, which I hoped was due to the small, tapered foot. I put fire to the cigar and after a couple puffs, smoke began to flow perfectly, the draw opening up just right.

The first inch or so was unfortunately quite bland to my palate. There was a smallish amount of spice on the tongue with the smoke very light and quite smooth, yet not much flavor at all after exhaling slowly. The finish was, well, not there. But, the burn was sharp with a very dark ash forming that had small, noticeable tooth and the draw perfect.

Around the halfway mark, I started to finally get a good flavor from the mild smoke, somewhat sweet with an almost buttery texture over the tongue. Kind of a woody, toasted nut taste on the palate; however the finish still wasn’t quite there.

Finishing up the cigar, there wasn’t much change other than a fairly decent straightforward Cuban tobacco coming through. The smoke was mild to not quite medium strength with very little spice. Overall not a bad cigar; however my thought was it had passed its prime. I’m just thrilled it wasn’t plugged! :D

Hope everyone is having a very Merry Christmas!

This is a pretty damn good cigar. i remember the box I won from a contest here. They was tasty to the very end of the box. I think my box was from 2000.

I have been smoking the last of my 97's and 99's both lately and have not found them bland or past their prime at all. Maybe you got a dud or one that hadn't been stored the best. Or you're not as over your cold as you thought :p

I was thinking the same thing while smoking it, that maybe my taste buds were a bit off. But, I got some really good flavor out of it in the last half, moreso towards the end.
