I really enjoy Sunday afternoons relaxing on the back porch with a cold drink and good stogie. The wife and baby girl usually curl up in one of the recliners and put on a movie, especially when it’s raining out. It’s actually stopped raining for the moment and the sun is peeking out from behind the clouds now and then, nice when it does. I grabbed a Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA out the fridge to enjoy along with the LGC I picked out of the humi. It’s been a while since I’ve had an LGC, and luckily was able to pick this one up in Phil’s last pass. The wrapper is a golden brown and quite smooth with barely noticeable tiny patchwork veins throughout. It feels rather light in the hand for its size; however is very firm when squeezed and after punching the cap I find the draw is very tight, but still some air is coming through. Hopefully it will open up once lit and the tobacco has warmed some.

Once lit, I take a number of quick puffs and it seems the draw is actually working well enough to get a decent draw, so a long one I take. There’s a small amount of spice noticeable as I exhale slowly through mouth and nose, the nostrils tingle only slightly. The strength of the smoke is mild to not quite medium and has a rather light mouth feel. Flavors at first have a very meaty taste with wood and floral notes in the finish.

A third in and the draw actually isn’t all too great, and I have to take a number of good puffs before taking a slow, long draw for decent smoke to come through. The burn is sharp however, with a medium gray ash that falls on its own about an inch in (hate when that happens). There’s a rich creaminess to the smoke as it flows over the palate, still somewhat mild to not quite medium, but very enjoyable nonetheless. The finish is incredibly good and lasts on the palate long after exhaling.

About halfway in and hot dog the draw opens up quite nicely allowing an ample amount of smoke to pour through. This reveals to me that the strength of the smoke was definitely hampered by the previous tight draw as it has now become a good medium with a nice kick of spice on the back of the throat, yet creamy smooth, almost buttery over the palate. Flavors remain what I would describe as meaty with a bit of floral, or maybe herbal, coming through in the lasting finish.

Okay, so I’m over halfway and the strangest thing. The draw is now almost completely closed up. What the hey. Not only that, but the sky has suddenly turned a deep shad of dark gray with some serious wind blowing the tree tops around like mad, rain coming down in huge drops. I continue tugging on the cigar and try rolling it around between my fingers, which does seem to help some as I’m able to get a decent amount of smoke out again. Wow the rain is coming down in buckets.

Heading into the final third, the draw is working well enough with the smoke continuing to be around medium strength. The burn has been razor sharp throughout the entire smoke with a solid, medium gray ash that was somewhat loose. Flavors have been really good leaning more towards a straightforward tobacco taste at the very end with the finish lasting on the palate. Other than having a tussle with the draw, this was a very fine cigar that I really enjoyed. I looked back and saw that Gary was the one who put the cigar in the pass, so thanks to him for the opportunity to sample it. The 90 Minute IPA (on my second one…heh…was very good as well).

Holy crap a huge clap of thunder just hit. Yikes!

Those MdOs with a bit of age on them are really great smokes. Another fine review Mr. Newsom

Hmmm, I don't recall having that draw issue, but it happens.

I think I'm out of these...but the 1's and 4's are smokng well!
