OK. I think it is time I do a review on one of these little bad boys. These are Pre-Embargo Henry Clay Non Plus Ultra Coquetas. They are little perfectos. 4" long and about 35-38 ring. Here you see 2 boxes. The one on the bottom is a full sealed box, the one on top has 16 cigars in it. These cigars are in perfect condition. Notice how yellow the cello is, but it is still in good shape. Many older cigars, the cello kind of falls apart (ie. Opus).

On to the review. I smell the foot, as I always do, and it smells of tobacco and barnyard. The prelight draw brings up flavors of grass, tobacco and cocoa. After lighting, I get strong flavors of tobacco and sweet wood and earth. I also start to sense some kind of dried fruit. This cigar has strong flavors. I remember reading in the MRN about cigars getting stronger with age.

After the 1st 3rd I taste a sort of custard flavor w/ a nutty side note. I can still taste the dried fruit but not strong enough to figure out what exactly it is. Into the 1/2 way mark I get a lot of earth and wood, less sweet than before and the strength is increasing. The last 3rd showed strong flavors of tobacco, earth and wood w/ a hint of tartness.

In the nub stage the dried fruit flavor sneaks in again. Also was a sign of pepper was starting to show up and grew stronger as the nub grew shorter. I sort of used the band as a roach clip.

The ash ranged from light grey to dark grey in some spots. The ash was firm even though this cigar had an easy draw.

Over all view of this cigar is that iit is a little power house, especially for its age. It was very pleasureable to smoke and had good flavor and lots of it  . I might hold on to that sealed box for a while but I might have to polish the open one off. :D

Atuck,

Once again a very nice review, the pictures are excellent. I would be happy with a 50 year old short story, I can't imagine a pre-embargo jewel.

Great review, Alan. The story in the inside of the flap is really interesting. When I was a kid, I was given a box of old knick-knacks by my grandfather. It was an empty box of Henry Clay cubans. It is really cool to see what was inside and thanks for the good trip down memory lane.
