My humi- in the dry winter, shrunk. It's been leaking for to long, after several efforts to seal it, it's still not holding.
The room my Humi is in is small 6'x10'.

Question : Can I run a humidifier in the room to raise the humidity in the entire room using regular water and not hurt the stogies?

I don't see why you couldn't but depending on the RH in the room you might go through quite a bit of water to try and maintain anything near 65-70%. In fact, I'm not sure it'd even be possible to get it that high this time of year but I guess it's worth a shot because every little bit should help stabilize the RH of your humidor.

Be sure you use an antibacterial agent, especially as high as you are trying to elevate the RH of the room.

Make sure you use an old school humidifier with the wick. I made the mistake of purchasing a few ultrasonic units and they require distilled water. In the ultrasonic ones, if you use tap water, they coat everything in the room with a fine, white, mineral powder.

I ran a thin bead of silicon calling around my edge. After about an hour of drying when it wasn't tacky, I closed it and put a heavy piece of equipment on it and left it there for a few days. Now it seals perfectly!

I can't imagine why this would be a problem. You use distilled water INSIDE your humidor because you do not want mold INSIDE your humidor. If you're generating humidity outside (Mother Nature is doing it everyday), then it won't matter.

If I understand you correctly, you're not trying to humify the whole room to store smokes. You're just hoping a more humid room will result in a slower bleed of humidity from your humidor, right?

Yes, I'm thinking this summer it will swell back up, so I don't want to screw it up by adding to much sealent.

Dave I had the same issue and went with some thin foam tape. All my draws leaked with the changes in the seasons. I highly sugest getting some of this foam tape and go around the door of the humi. Dont waste you money on a room humidifier just use foam tape and it will expand and contract with the wood. just like windows on a house.

I agree with Tall Paul. Had the same issue. $6 at Home Depot solves the problem.

Glad I peeked at this thread. I have that problem and have been at a loss as to how to get a decent seal. HD, hear I come.

I'm going to head over to Lows.

I'm thinking about putting everything back in the marine cooler, right now my humi is holding steady at 59%

A typical decent quality room humidifier should cut off when the room reaches 45% rh. That said, you should always reseason in the winter. The box has stabilized over the more humid months and the "shock" of home heating, etc. Can really drop the boxes inherant moisture. You could, with a damp sponge, and I mean damp, i.e., well rung out, wipe the mating surfaces and raised lip on both lid and bottom. Do it every day for a week or more. I have had a lot of success with this.

Also, assuming you are dealing with a desk top, another more daring method I figured out years ago for a box-in-box type construction humidor. I.e., there are cedar panels lining the
inside of an outer hardwood or mdf box. VERY carefully, try pulling out the side panels. Now see if the bottom panel is loose. A better quality box should be loose to allow for expansion and contraction. Take some sheets of cedar, like the kind used between layers or on top of cigars, and place those on the bottom, being sure that they are along the edges/corners. When you re-install the side wall cedar panels, you have effectively raised the lip, providing a better contact for the mating surfaces. If the box is veneered solid cedar, with the lip on top, use some genuine beeswax on the mating surfaces. rub it in generously, and see if that is enough to improve the seal. This method will work on the box-in-box type humi too.

What did you end up doing? With it that low on RH you may want to still wipe down the inside.

I ended up opening a bottle wine.

Removing all the boxes and wipping it down seems like alot of work. Never made it to Lowes.
