In April I proudly took command of an Engineer Company and less than a month later, boarded a MD-80 heading East. Most of us have been out here nearly two months and have executed some pretty gnarley missions in the folded terrain of the Afghan/Packistani border region. Our mission is to provide Route Clearance Support to Maneuver Forces in Paktika province and to ensure economic lines of communication remain clear and available for the citizens of Afghanistan. My company of Combat Engineers plus 10 or so mechanics and other supporting specialties do what the infantry consider crazy: go out to purposefully find IEDs in Regional Command East, Afghanistan.

Never before have I been so busy or so happy to be so. I still take time for a cigar now and again, bringing my entire collection of traveldor cases and have enjoyed the benefits of a well oiled military postal service system. Slowly but surely I'm getting the whole company used to smoking cigars as I've shared a couple boxes on special occasions, My Father on Father's Day, CAO La Traviata for a good luck send off for one of my platoons prior to a long mission in support of the Infantry, and so on.

With the 4th of July coming up, what should I get to share with my troops? Most of 'em don't smoke many cigars so robustos or corona vitolas seem to be appropriate.

Daniel, While I was visiting my son this last winter in St. Joe I went to the Outlaw to pick up a few smokes. I bought the last four FFP's they had and then sat in the lounge to smoke a stick. There was a young man that I got to visiting with who was an engineer in the Air Force I believe stationed in Kansas that called Montana home. Before I left I gave him one of my pigs since he was smoking one and enjoying it very much. Would that young man happen to have been you? I am from Wyoming and I think I mentioned that to you. If this is you I hope you are doing well and stay safe my friend.

I'm not going to lie this just brought a tear to my eye! What a small world indeed. Hope You are staying safe out there Kid and Lefty good looking out.

As for the smoke I would go with the Padron 1926 #35 small in size which is good for a non smoker but an outstanding smoke. I hope you and your boys have a great 4th and get to enjoy those smoke. What ever you choose let us know and I will make sure I light up the same.

Thank you to you and all our armed forces for what you do.

Paul

Daniel, that's an awesome story about you and Lefty. Westerners unite!

I'll be back out in October. Keep yourself and your guys safe out there, and if you need anything, let me know. Afghanistan is tough enough; Paktika is a b!tch of a place.

Glad to hear the Engineer Company has one hell of a commander, but sorry to hear you're having to do the nation's bidding again in far away places.

It's probably too late to get to you by July 4th, but what about something from the La Aroma de Cuba line? They make robustos, coronas, and rothchilds (rothchildren?) so it won't be too big of a smoke for the guys who aren't regulars. As you know...they're a good cigar to give to a newbs. ;) Plus, they're just dang good! You also couldn't go wrong with a Padron 2000 which is about the right size for your needs.

Is the address in your profile current?

Hey bro, hope you are all staying safe. Hey bros. and sisters any way we can put a package together for Daniel and his troops. I have no experience with shipping things to our fighting men and women but would love to send a nice package of goodies over there. Anyone with experience in this type of thing willing to take charge and get something sent to this fine bro. and his men?

thanks
