A friend of mine and fellow Balvenie collector from Germany sent me a 100ml sample of some privately bottled 1966 Blair Athol. The story is that this man's father was in the business and bought a cask and had it shipped to Germany where he put it in the basement and promptly forgot about it. After he died in 2007 his son got the house and finally got around to cleaning out the basement last year when the cask was rediscovered.

The angels got their share and some of everybody elses too as I was told it yeilded only 93 200ml bottles which were given out as presents. My buddy got 2 of them since he is on the fringe of the family and a known scotch dog just like me.

Good, bad or otherwise it's gone Christmas eve.

Damn. Enjoy brother. I almost slapped a friend who I opened his cupboard and there sat a 21 yr old portwood. He didn't know what it was because a friend gave it to him. He was going to mix it with coke :(

Great Ray, I love a spirit with a great story.  I look forward to hearing how it was.

I can't wait for the review.  It should be real interesting.

Wow...  That is pretty cool.  I know about bunkering bottles but, bunkering a barrel that's a whole new level.

I hope it is enjoyed in good company.  What a memory that will be.

Merry Christmas, Enjoy!!.

Excellent dram for Christmas Eve, I too will be waiting for a review.

I know there's a bottle of Balvenie DW 17 that will take a hammering during the pre and post Christmas wandering but I don't have anything picked out for Christmas Eve.

Well Ray, here it is January 9th, and I have been waiting to read your review of the 1966 Blair Athol.  What did you think? :whistling:

It was one of those things that your mother tells you. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything.  Way too much wood and something I can only describe as a bit musty.on the finish. It wasn't that bad initially, very very smooth really but it just didn't taste right to me. Certainly not one of my favorites but I wouldn't have passed up the chance. It made the next dram a1969 Milburn that much better.
