I'm running in my first 5k obstacle course race/mud run tomorrow.  I've done 5ks before but never like this.  Its set up sort of like a mini tough mudder and the whole event supports Type I diabetes research.

I'm pretty excited about the whole thing and I'm looking forward to achieving a personal goal and overcoming the challenge.

My question is, anyone ever done one of these types of events before and have any pointers or suggestions?  I've been training endurance and strength wise but any advice always helps.

Thanks!

I've done a couple of Mud/Fun in the past; Warrior Dash and some local things. It really boils down to what you're goals are.  In the Warrior Dashes the top 10 runners are coming in around 20 minutes.  On the other hand I have seen pregnant women running in them as well.

As far as pointers...Running wet and muddy sucks, your clothes will get soaked.  If you want a competitive time go off early in the day and be at the front of your heat.  Get out fast as every event I have ran bunches right after the start and then again when you start to hit the first set of hills.  The trails generally aren't super wide and people tend to run in groups, try picking your way around the outside.

Obstacles are usually pretty easy with the exception of  monkey bars, they suck when you aren't wet and muddy.  If there is a horizontally cargo net forgo crawling a crossed it and just jump and roll.  Otherwise the obstacles are all pretty straight forward.

Hell I saw a guy run one of these in a kilt, so I think you should be good.

Great info, thanks!

There are a lot of people signed up for this event so they have wave start times so unfortunately I cant pick the time I want to leave, but... I will do what I can to not get bunched up at least with my start wave.

My goal really is to complete each obstacle.  I'm trying not to think too much about the time as I don't want to psych myself out and be too concerned with that as I'm running.  Unfortunately there are monkey bars ughhhh.  I know how much these suck.  Not looking forward to it, but I'm gonna do it!

Thanks again, I'll let everyone know how it went and post pictures if I can.

Well I ran it and it was awesome.  Challenging, but awesome.

The worst parts were by far taking a 50lb Wreck Bag, which is basically a long sandbag with two handles, up a 119 foot incline, pushing the f&%*^&$ tire through mud, and carrying a 65lb cement ball around a baseball diamond.  There were a lot of hills, a lot of mud, but overall it was an awesome experience.

Check out just a few shots below.

That was freakin' awesome...congrats man! Great job!! The pic of you coming out of the dumpster made me laugh

Thanks guys!

Haha yeah the dumpster was ridiculous.  It was one of the next to last obstacles and all I could think was "are you serious?"
