We're here in Trinidad and one of my coworkers recently bought a box of Cohiba Esplendidos in a back alley setting (against my advice). The box and seal seems counterfeit but the bands on the cigars are pretty convincing (font, dots, embossed printing) and the wrapper is a very attractive Colorado as one might expect from the genuine article. The cigar itself gives the appearance of quality construction and has an enticing spicy aroma. We smoked one and I have to say it was very good and seemed quite Cuban. Am I imagining things, or are some fake Cohibas actually decent Habanos as well? Could this cost possibly be the real McCoy, say as a stolen shipment that had been reboxed? Inquiring minds want to know. If I can manage it I'll post a pic.

Post some pictures of the cigars and bands if you can manage.

I have read that counterfeits come from all over, including Cuba, so they might have used real Cuban tobacco for those. I have a cousin, his mother in law went to Cuba and bought him a box of Cohiba that were in fact fakes. We dissected one and they were very well made with long filler tobacco. I didn't smoke one because I just don't trust any counterfeit, but my cousin did and he said they were very good.

Your Fugazis could be Cuban leaf, but not likely Cohiba. Could be factory leaf, could be farm leaf. Is it all long filler with a triple cap? The box is likely not legit, just some scraps put together. Enjoy the cigars with a Milk Stout. John

Is it unrealistic to thing a floor manager at a cigar factory could set aside a few bundles for his bonus?

Seems plausible.

I smoked another one last night. Had a taste almost like shellac. Not so good this time. I can't post pictures from my phone it seems.

They put in the cigars while the box was still wet from the varnish. John
