Whiskey Porn....still a novice

I've had a lot of fun recently getting into Whiskey as a new hobby and slowing down on the craft beer purchasing. While whiskey is a much more expensive hobby, I do believe it is a little bit healthier for you long term since I tend to drink beer in excess and thoroughly enjoy 2-3 small pours of whiskey before calling it a night. Maybe this is just me justifying it to myself, but regardless, I've had fun chasing a bunch of bottles. This is only about one month of getting into it....although, in my defense, there were a decent amount of bottles I had prior to this as well. Because I like looking at Whiskey and reading about it just as much as I like drinking it...

That Balvenie looks lonely in the middle of all those bourbons.  You should add some Glendronach to keep it company.  :p

It really IS healthier, especially if you're watching carbs.  When I went on the South Beach Diet a few years back, they told me if I wanted to drink, I should drink Scotch, because it has the fewest carbs of any distilled liquor.  Oh, twist my arm, I said!   :whistling:

My problem is keeping it to "2-3 small whiskys" . . . I can sip my way through half a bottle over the course of an evening of movies and cigars and not be drunk at all---because I've stayed well within my metabolism---but not be worth a tinker's damn the next day, either.

Here is my cabinet.  Last count was 100+.  Mostly bourbon, rye and a few scotches.

If I'm not mistaken that one is age stated before they dropped it.

If you look closely there is also a bottle of Chivas 18 and MacAllen 12.  I'm not one much for scotch but bought the double wood because I heard it helps to break down the barriers. I'm just not a fan of the smokey and peaty flavors..still working on the sherry cask stuff.

I'm a Speyside boy myself.  Love sherry and port and rum caskings.  If you like the Doublewood, you'd love Glendronach---especially the 12 and the Revival, their 15 year old.  I switch back and forth myself . . . mostly a sherry and port cask Scotch fan, but sometimes I just really want a bourbon.

You may not feel drunk, but unless your 7ft5 400lbs I'd say you drunk brotha! Our bodies feel that way because alcohol is a toxin and does damage that the body is recovering from. Drink plenty of water when you drink and you should feel a little better the next day.

Salud!

Boar,

How'd you like the Glendronach Cask Strength.  I have been working on thinning out some of my open bottles.  I am about ready to pop the cork on something in the bunker and have been thinking that my be the one to try while I can still get more.

I got some cask strength at the Glendronach distillery that quickly became my favorite. It's a distillery I don't see for sale anywhere, though. Picked up a bottle of the 18 Allardice that got packed in my gear back to the states. It's the first thing I'll be opening when the shipment arrives.

Have you tried the Pappy yet? Really would like to hear your experience with it.

They have a release now not sure of the distribution.  I believe they are on batch #2.  Its for sale here for $90.

This is the bottle that I have.

Absolutely loved it.

I'm a fan of cask strengths in general, and Glendronach is my favorite distillery.  I've had a several of their cask strength offerings (in addition to their regular one, they do special cask strength bottlings for retailers---Spec's, here in Texas, commissioned at least one and was able to get one of those, a Pedro Jimenez casking) and they've all been spectacular.  Everyone likes something different, I suppose, but for me Glendronach is exactly everything I look for in a Scotch.

Spec's dropped the distributor that was supplying them with Glendronach and Benriach (my other favorite distillery; their Tawny Port Cask is wonderful, and their Solstice 2nd Edition, if you can find one, is the best Scotch I've ever tasted) but Twins Liquor up in San Antonio carries the full lineup still . . . I need to make a road trip.  ;)

Well, I'm 6'2" and 300# and I've been drinking Scotch for 35+ years, so no, I'm not . . . you lightweight amateur!  :p

Not drunk, and not hungover the next day. Just . . . languid.

But diabetes runs in my family, on my father's side (I'm 1/8 Cherokee, which is probably part of it) and alcohol turns to blood sugar . . . and also raises your triglyceride level, which my PRN is getting a little worried about . . . so, yeah, I've cut way back.  Until summer break, anyway . . . that's when the mojitos come out.  :D

Here's my small collection.  I plan to add to it over time.  I'm not one for bourbon or Scotch so I'm probably at odds with most of you guys.

I had some new acquisitions this week:

1. Buffalo Trace Single Oak Project #190
2. Wild Turkey Forgiven
3. Blanton's Original

If you crack that bottle of Jameson 18 let me know what you think...might be awhile before I open mine.

I didn't take the bottle out for the picture but it has been cracked open.  In fact, after I finish this beer I might have to dip into it again.  From what I remember the aroma is awesome.  I'm a big fan of anything Jameson, as you can tell by the handle in the pic, but the 18 was taking it to the next level.  I remember the first and second time I had some I spent about the first 10 minutes just smelling it before the first sip!
