Blind Cigar Reviews

I would also like to try this cigar again. I think maybe that maybe I got a bad one not that it was bad I just thought this cigar could be better, The flavors came and went and were not very pronounced. Just a feeling I have like it was ready but just was not. Hell I don't know what I'm talking about it was still a good smoke but reading some of the reviews on it I think I should of gotten a little more.

Jeff, that cigar was an '06. I don't have the box code on me at the moment, but I had one a couple weeks ago and thought it was still smoking nice. My apologies if it was headed south, I'll give another a try this week and let you know if they are headed to sleep. I'll make sure to send you something better if this was the case.

Blind Cigar Pass Review

I finally had an evening free to sit down with the mystery cigar I received from Jeff1101, and I knew I was in for a treat. The MS (that Mystery Stick) was one of my favorite sizes, a toro, and had an intriguing wrapper. Dark and oily and covered in the fine tooth, the wrappers deep reddish color was what really piqued my interest. It had that sun grown “look” to it and smelled of the sweet spice that you get from a sungrown wrapper, but the color was very uniform, the veining very fine, and it appeared fairly thin (there was a tiny tear in the head just below the line of the cap.) My initial impressions pegged it as an Opus, but I wasn’t sure there was an Opus toro… Only one way to find out.

The cap clipped off with notable ease, which is perhaps why I am noting it here… But there was something in the way it literally “popped” off when I applied my cigar scissors to it that gave me pause. The MS was put together very well. It was solid with a non-too subtle give in the outer layers. Peaking beneath the cap, the filler bunch looked robust had almost had that “random squigglyness” of a Cuban. The foot sucked up the flame from the Z+ and was lit with next to no effort.

The initial flavors that charged, rough-shod, over my pallet were rich with spice and a deep rich toasty luxury. I dunno… It just tasted luxurious. The draw was on the lighter-side of perfect, but the smoke volume was, well lets just say others might call it excessive. I just call it impressive. People often talk about “clouds” of smoke, but this puppy was like a friggin fog-machine. I could have single handedly fogged-up the set of the next Dracula flick.

The first ½ inch was all spice. Spice on my lips, pepper on my tongue, chilie flavors towards the back of my pallet. There was also a considerable nicotine “punch,” even this early in the smoke. I started to get a bit worried but the awesome flavors that the MS was developing distracted me from the buzz that I was working on. If I had to choose ONE adjective to describe the smoke it would be SMOOTH. Or maybe COMPLEX. SPICETASTIC would be another good one. Perhaps WONDERLICIOUS. It is a good think that I don’t have to pick just one!

Towards the middle of the MS flavors were developing, but I was having a hard time pinning any one down. I got hints of burnt citrus, some grapefruit, leather, a lot of wood, a hint of yeast, and of course spice. But the predominant flavor was that of very high quality fermented tobacco. There was a richness and sweetness that really stretched across whatever individual flavor notes I was able to pick-out. I began to suspect I was smoking a Casa Fuente of some kind. The top-tier ingredients, perfect construction and masterful blending, all seemed to point towards a Fuente product. I was able to convince myself that I could taste the handwork of Carlito in the stick. Yup. This was defiantly an Opus or a Casa. Maybe an ESG, though I thought those were much bigger. What other lines does Carlito have his hands in I wondered as I nubbed the MS.
That was a damn fine smoke, and given my limited experience with ISOM sticks I wouldn’t have been surprised to find a Habana brand band in the envelope. But I was pretty sure I’d just smoked a Fuente of some ilk. I tore open the envelope and was greeted with a very thin and nondescript brown band. “It was a Cuban!” I exclaimed as I turned the band the right-way-around to read the mark. Nope, it was a Tatuaje!

My first Tatuaje, and I was very impressed with the smoke. Full-flavored and complex Nicaraguan Puro, the Tatuaje Regios was a real treat to smoke, and I will definitely be hunting more of these down. Thanks Jeff1101 for a real delight of a cigar!

Nice post and review John. I echo your statement above exactly except the buzz is what keeps me away from this brand. Great flavors but I can't deal with that buzz. I'm a light weight I know.

Wow, John. Very nice review! The Tat's are a fantastic line and I enjoy them whenever possible. The only vitola that kicked my ass was the infamous Reserva J21. I still have one or two left that I have not touched since that review. Perhaps we should do a paired review some time.

Well done!

John, that is a amazing review bro!!!
Thanks for that!!! I have a Regios resting... not for long now!!! ;)

John great review I myself have not tried that cigar yet I acquired two in a purchase the other shall find a torch very soon. ;)

Great review!

Cory definitely done good in setting this up :)

Well it is 4:30 am and I have been up for about 45 minutes. I have already had a cup of coffee and about to have another with this cigar. My back is giving me trouble I can’t stay in bed too long. That’s the reason I am around so much lately. I have only been working part time. Normally I work about 50 hours a week. It is tough getting old. I have been making the boys pick up the slack. They are not happy about it but have been doing a good job of it. When I feel better you won’t hear from me as much. I’m sure that will make some of you happy as I have been accused of posting too much. The envelope.....

Upon viewing this very dark Robusto cigar I sniffed the foot for any aroma. I could smell what I consider to be a standard smell for a mid priced maduro wrapped cigar. Earthy, with just a hint of cedar not as aromatic as I like in my cigars. The body of the cigar was very firmly built, very nice construction. Maybe a box pressed cigar that has been out of the box awhile.

I clipped the head with a notch clipper and the wrapper remained intact. Sometimes that type clipper can rip the wrapper at the end of the clip on a thicker wrapper. This wrapper looks delicate for a maduro. I like that in a maduro wrapper, some can be so thick and toothy. Pre-light draw required very little effort. I toasted the foot and blew on it to make sure the cigar was fully lit.

The pre-draw aroma was a nice I could not discern any specific smell but it was pleasant enough. I got the impression that it would a strong cigar.

Well the first few puffs were not so strong. There is some creaminess and something else but I can’t put my finger on it yet. I think it might be cocoa. There is not the earthiness I usually associate with this type of wrapper. This tastes like a Dominican made cigar.

I am in about an inch and my ash fell off. It was my fault though trying to turn the camera on while holding the cigar. I like this cigar, my mouth stays moist while smoking and I like that about a cigar. Still very creamy at this point still have that cocoa hint and there is still something unique in the flavor. I know I have not smoked this cigar before. It is unique enough in flavor for me to know this cigar when I smoke it again. I like this cigar enough to go out and get a box. It is very tasty indeed.

I would say at the half way point that it is a medium strength cigar as I tend to inhale the cigar very slightly on occasion. The wrapper is smooth more like a natural then a maduro. The ash is seems to be holding and is whitish gray and looks very good. The quality of construction is coming through. I notice that this is not an oily cigar. The cigar has smoked very cool through this point as well.

Coming down the home stretch and the cigar has not lost the creaminess. The flavor has remained up to this point. Moistness in my moth remains as well. Still has a firm foot, very good construction. There is a hint of spice starting to come through and that distinct flavor as well.

The cigar stayed lit throughout the entire smoke. Lost my ash again this time it just fell off on its own. I was trying to get it to hold on as long as I could especially after knocking it off earlier. I don’t think it will hold much past an inch on its own. That for me is no big deal it still manages to remain cool enough.

Overall I liked this cigar, nice flavor and unique. There are only a few cigars I can say that about in my experience. I think I could identify this flavor in a blind smoke test. Construction was excellent throughout as well. The flavors remained throughout as well although that spiciness I got at the midway point seemed to disappear near the end. I would have to say I liked this cigar better then 85% of all other cigars I have smoked. I hope it is not to expensive as I would like to add a few boxes to my humidor. Smoking time was about an hour and a half.

Now for the unvailing, may I have the envelope please…………..It is a La Gloria Wavell Madoro from 2002-2003. I was correct I have never smoked this cigar. It is one of those things I kind of overlooked in the past, No more, look out JR here I come. Time for another cup of coffee.

This was fun I never smoked a cigar as crtically before makes you really take notice. I hope you found this review interesting and insightful. Sorry about the quality of the pictures but the camera is old like me.

Edit:

After spending time writing this review I noticed that the flavor of the cigar remained. That flavor I could't put my finger on while smoking now I would say is toasty. Very nice.....

Nice review Paul!

LGC's with a little time under their belts are nothin' to sneeze at. And reasonbly priced too.

Hope your back feels better...

Really nice review, sounds like a winner as most if not all of the La Gloria cigars are.

I was torn weather to put a high-$ smoke into this pass, or something that I find somewhat underrated. I went with the "blue collar" LGC because it is one of my all-time favorites (and I noticed you said you like 'em dark and strong in your profile.) I love pretty much everything that comes out of El Credito, but the Wavell is my favorite. It has a unigue character that i find makes it stand out from the crowd. Try the Torp #1 in Maduro for a great marathon smoke.

Great review I like LGC especially the serie R maybe I will light one up right now :D

Great review, I have about ten each Natural and Maduro of the Wavells from 2004. I am trying to hold out a little longer maybe til 2009. They are very enjoyable though. Im not sure why I haven't bought many in the recent past. I guess I just get caught up in other gars out there.

This pass review thread is one of my favs on the board ATM.

Here we go.

Upon initial inspection I already knew I would like this one. Box pressed sqaure shaped torpedo Maduro ( good ) small veins ( good ) wrapper is oily and very pleasant to the touch ( even better ) and the foot smells great ( I am lighting this one right now ;)

4-1.jpg

Got a clean cut with my Palio cutter and took the prelight draw. Very nice draw and seems like this one will be a rather smooth smoke. The lighting was effortless and the first pull proived me correct. Lots of smooht creamy smoke without the harshness that some cigars have even if at the begining. A few more puffs and I feel chocolaty or cocoa tones with some cedary undertones and a bit of leather.

Can this be a Padron Anniv ??? let go further and see

Ash fell off about 2-3 inches into this baby right after I took this pic

3-4.jpg

Now I am starting to question my initial guess. The ash is too flaky for Paddy Aniv also the ring gage is a little too big as well I think. I am also getting more spice now. Still no harshness. Well I am almost sure this has NC tobacco but now I think I am also getting hints of Honduran tobacco as well. Creamy clouds of smoke all around me.

2-4.jpg

Now going into the finall stretch. I am getting more cedar and more spice. Ok I am ruling out Paddy Anivv as I remmember the flavor profile being different for that one. Perhaps Indian Tabac. Considered Sancho Panza DM but only for a minute as I know that one does not have a torpedo in its line up. What ever it is I think this had some age on it as it is exceptionally smooth.
I am getting an urge to get a box or at least a fiver of these.

Can't wait any longet time to open the mystery unvelope.

WOW Maria Mancini Magic Mountain.

1-4.jpg

Well I got the NC and Honduras right but the Costa Rica wrapper def added an extra touch to this one and also proved that a good cigar does not have to cost and arm and a leg

Thanks for letting me try this

I know what my next buy will be :whistling:

Nice review, They are a good cheap cigar, better with a little more time on them then the one I sent you. Wanted to give you an everyday cigar to review, we have a lot less reviews of them then the higher priced cigar. I hope you enjoy the other smokes.
