We’ve had mid to lower 30F temps the past few days with frost every morning, however this morning was mid to upper 40’s. Weatherman said was going to get up to the 70’s today and sure enough, sun was warm creeping over the tree line with not a cloud in the sky and not even a faint breeze blowing. I decided since it was to be such a beautiful day, I’d have a go at the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Especial and H. Upmann Mag 50 ‘08’s. I need to give a huge thanks to Don (Pembroke3355) as he was most generous in sending this and the H. Upmann Mag 50 after I mentioned in his post that I’d love to try them. Not only did he gift these, but threw in a third very nice smoke as well. Thank you Don! Most generous of you!

I started out with the HDM Epi E with a fresh brewed cup of coffee. The wrapper was a golden brown and quite coarse. It seems this cigar only had a double cap, or at least that’s all I could see even with my glasses on. :D It had a nice weight in the hand and only a slight give when squeezed. I punched the cap and found a near perfect draw with no real discernible taste other than fresh, raw tobacco. I put fire to the foot and blew on the toasted tobacco to get an even burn. Tons of smoke rolled from the fiery foot.

First draw was very mild with no spice to be found. I had thought maybe there wasn’t enough fire put to the foot yet, however there was a good burn going all around with a huge amount of smoke. Several more draws in the smoke continued to be quite mild, however the flavor was an incredible sweet caramel and brown sugar. This was about the creamiest smoke I think I’ve ever had, like silk on the tongue. A third in and the caramel is oozing from the smoke and absolutely delicious. I could tell the cigar was very young and needed more rest, as the nicotine level was still quite high. I was getting a fairly nice head rush, and I could feel my pulse quicken a bit. Whoa. :D

Around the half way point, I started getting a bit of white pepper spiciness on the back of the throat and the strength started turning to a medium. I was still getting the caramel, but it too began to darken a bit into more of a slightly burnt caramel with the dark brown sugar notes. Towards the end it was a full medium with a rich earthiness coming through, but still sweet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this smoke, even though it started out being mild. I loved the creaminess texture and the caramel flavor. I did have some burn issues with running a couple of times and the wrapper did crack a couple of times. However, I can see having some of these in the humi for sure!

Thanks for the review! These seem like unique smokes, and I can't wait for the chance to try one.

Ok Greg, you are going to have to stop the insanity! Every damn time I look at a topic started by you, I go cry a little bit, then grab a smoke out of the humi.

Another great review! Damn, you take fantastic pics by the way!

Lol, I was thinking the exact same thing.

Good review, that wrapper looked like a mountain range taken from a satellite it was so bumpy. I believe some of that was the way the light was casting shadows, but dam(n) it made the thing look like some stick from Mexico. Certainly did not look at all like a "dark, smooth silky" wrapper.

Those are some tasty looking pictures... I feel like I could taste the cigar just from lookin!

This is has become one of my favorite smokes. Perfect when you want something on the lighter side.

Oh what I would not give to smoke one or two of these!

Great review and lovely pics!

PM me your addy and I will get one out to you on friday. I hope you enjoy it. One condition is that when you get a chance to do the same for someone please do it.

Thanks
Don

thank you for the awesome review.

I need to get my hands on some more CC HDM's, the few I have had have been delicious.

Great review!

I smoke Excalibur's, which i believe are from the same manufacturer. I wanted to branch out on their line a bit, and this has convinced me to do so.

I received the stick and placed it in a 67/65 environment to help it get over its jet-lag. Giving it one week to do so and off with its head and a fiery death for him.

Thanks so much and even more so for the stow aways!
