It’s a very nice day with partly cloudy skies and the temps in the low 70’s. I was thinking about smoking an Opus xXx, however it being so nice out I decided to pick up a nice, long smoke: Romeo y Julieta Prince of Wales from ’98 vintage.

There was a box shape to the cigar with the wrapper chocolate brown, smooth except for a couple patchworks of veins. There were noticeable oils when held in the sunlight and the weight felt a tad bit on the light side. I punched the triple cap with the small ring and found the draw on the loose side, but still a light resistance was there that I hoped would remain once lit. I put fire to the foot and smoke was plentiful with tastes of coffee bean, cinnamon, cocoa, and a floral note that is typical of the RYJ profile. Superb flavors with a clean, creamy, lasting finish. The strength was a perfect medium to almost full with a nice touch of white pepper spice. It had a perfect burn with a strong, dark gray ash forming. I rather enjoy the floral notes that come through in the smoke that is typical of an RYJ. Along with the flavors previously described, I also detected nice toasty bread, possibly a dark Melba toast.

The sky began to darken a bit, looking like it may start to rain. That would really suck as the wife just left to go get propane for the grill. Planning on some thick cheeseburgers for dinner. It’s our seven-year anniversary, and I usually make Chicken Parmesan for our candlelight dinner. But, for some reason she wanted cheeseburgers. Sounded good to me! :D

I continued to take slow, long draws from the cigar, and although the draw was slightly loose the small amount of resistance was enough to keep from getting too much smoke out. I let the cigar rest a good, full minute between draws and the fire continued to burn perfectly. Our cat, Tinker, came to join me on the porch and got quite comfortable in one of “his” chairs. Within minutes he was snoring quite loudly. Ah the life of a cat.

Flavors remained consistent and delicious with the smoke a good medium to full strength. I would definitely describe it as very creamy on the palate. I ashed the cigar about every inch, and the burn remained sharp until hitting the halfway mark where it got to one side too much, requiring a little touch up. It continued to burn to one side until the final inch. An excellent, excellent smoke!

A fine review of a fine smoke. And congrats on the anniversary Greg! And congrats on weather warm enough to grill and eat cheeseburgers outside after a nice long smoke!

Very nice review Greg, thanks! How would you compare the same year (about the same year) RyJ Churchill to this?
