I received this cigar in a MAWPIF a little while back and have seen mixed comments about it, most stating they weren’t impressed. The cigar itself had good construction with a dark brown wrapper and a couple of noticeable veins. There was a decent weight in the hand and very little give when squeezed. I punched the pigtail cap and found the draw only slightly loose with only a light tobacco taste.

I torched the foot and plenty of smoke was produced and after a couple of puffs to get it going good, I took a good draw and was hit with a load of black pepper spice. There wasn’t much flavor in the smoke, only a very slight hint of woodiness. A little further in, the black pepper spice continued, and I could detect some leather, wood, and possibly a hint of vanilla.

Getting around the halfway point, the spice began to subside a bit and the flavors actually picked up and were fairly good with earth, leather, wood, and a hint of toasted nuts. It seemed I could detect a bit of cinnamon spice and vanilla. There wasn’t much finish to speak however, the aftertaste somewhat bland to my palate. Towards the end the spice almost disappeared altogether and the smoke became quite smooth with the same flavors previously mentioned.

This cigar started off not so good with just a lot of spice, however turned out a fairly decent smoke midway. The burn was good with a gray and black mottled ash that I knocked off every half inch or so. I’ll have to say that I too was not very impressed with this smoke.

Been meaning to try the Cruzado range for a while (but I have been holding off because of the low AUD exchange rate).

Are there any you would recommend so I can spring for a 5er?

This is the only one I've had, and if I had any others they would be headed your way since I probably wouldn't smoke them. :D

There is no need to practice before receiving the smokes from MOKI...LMAO

Woah there... this is NOT a mooch attempt, if that is what you are thinking. I am no sponger... Andrew will vouch for that, I hope.

I wanted to know what size is the best so I am not wasting my 5er money at such a low exchange rate.

I don't believe he was calling you a mooch, I think he was refering to Kingantz practicing reviews before the blind tasting thread? I could be wrong however.

Not what I was thinking at all, actually far from it. Just saying I didn't care for this particular smoke, and if I did have any others I'd send them to you to try simply because I wouldn't smoke them. ;)

Thanks for the review Greg. I've been very curious about this one as well. I've heard some mixed reviews on it and this one seems to be very common. Hopefully it was a dud.

My thoughts also Greg. I would not go out of my way for this stick.

Macion,
I've tried 3 of each size in the line. I enjoyed this blend in the Avalitos 4 X 46, and the the Marelas 5-5/8 X 46.

There's a sampler of all vitola's comming my way so I can judge for myself.
Thanks for the review Greg.

Cheers mate. I might look into trying some Marelas.

I had two of these and fell in love with them, Sort of remind me of VSG. After I feel in love with them I brought a box.

Edit to add: Greg you should try another one of these, they (to me) were great from start to finish.

I'm a big fan of Illusiones and was badgering Dion for info (which he guarded like a state secret) before these were released. I bought a box of Domenicos (Corona Gorda) the day they came out and could hardly wait the week I let them sit before trying them. First one was a bit disappointing as were the second and third. I found them to be beautiful and impeccably built, solid smoking cigars but the flavor was...tight - like a wine that wasn't ready. Needless to say, I was bummed and the box sort of got buried in my humidor. I took one out about a month ago and wow - what a big difference a few months of settling time makes.

I found it to be excellent but to confirm my thoughts on taste and do a comparison, I smoked a cg4 later that same day. I found the Cruzados to be a bit milder than the Illusiones but they have a subtler, "full mouth" flavor that is more complex than the wonderful albeit uncomplicated straight Nicaraguan punch of the Illusiones. I'm guessing they'll improve even more with further rest.

Give 'em some aging time and then smoke another.

I have to agree with Tim on this one. I was in the same boat looking forward to anything new from Dion since I am a slight Illusione whore (least for the smaller sizes). The first day I found the Cruzado's in the local B&M I smoked 1 of the 3 I just got right away, and much like your review about half way down the stick it lost its taste for me. I stashed the other two cigars away deep in my Illusione area in my cooler and figured I would revisit these come summer again.

Greg have a blast with the upcoming Moki blind taste test.... I look forward to your photos detailing the samples.

Thanks for the review Greg, as always.

I've only had the Marios vitola, it's the churchill size I believe, and I was very impressed with it actually. I was very skeptical at first, considering the on/off reviews about them, but I was thoroughly impressed. It actually was very, very good. It was an absolute coffee bomb, loaded with hazelnuts.

I wouldn't give up on them yet Greg...try the Marios!

The Cruzado I had tasted like dried-out wood. The consistency with these is all over the place. ???
