Happy Good Friday all! David (Carps) picked up some ’99 Boli CE from me a little while back, and he offered to send me one of his ‘99 to compare. I received the cigar not long after and of course, he smacked me by including four other very nice smokes (thanks again David). I really enjoy a Bolivar in the mornings with a fresh brewed cup of coffee, so smoke it this morning I will! 
I have to admit, the wrapper on the ’99 David sent has a darker brown color to it than the ‘99’s I have, and also has a good bit more oiliness. There’s a patchwork of veins throughout the wrapper as well with noticeable bluish green plume. This cigar has been stored very well me thinks. It has a very small amount of give when squeezed and no hard spots at all. I punch the cap and find the draw spot on with a sweet cocoa taste coming through.
Torching the foot, the smoke coming from the toasting tobacco is heavenly. I take a few puffs and then a slow, long draw. Oh yeah, now THIS is most definitely Bolivar! There’s a delicious salty sweetness on the lips, and I can’t help but smack. Mmmm…mmm! A perfect spice comes through with tastes of rich, dark chocolate fudge with caramel and a black licorice. Old worn leather and dark earth are also coming through in the medium to full bodied smoke.
The burn is sharp with a medium to dark gray ash forming that holds strong until ashed about every quarter inch. The draw is perfect for the good, medium strength of the smoke being produced. Rich flavors as described previously continue to come through and are a perfect fit with the coffee. I find the finish very rich and lasting on the palate.
The burn got a little crazy a few times in the last half, but corrected itself with some puffing and purging. Towards the end, in the last third, the cigar wanted to go out on me even with a good amount of puffing, which led me to believe there was a tunnel in it. I finally had to do some touching up, and the final inch smoked good. I will say there was a slight bitterness in that last inch as well with the nub getting fairly hot.
This cigar definitely outshined the ’99 Boli CE I have. Not that they’re not good, but nowhere near as rich in flavor. I’d LOVE to find a full box of Bolis at this caliber. David, thanks once again for an incredible smoke. I truly enjoy a Bolivar, and this was one of the best I’ve had.
