What a beautiful day in the South! Temperature in the mid 80’s, clear blue sky with a soft breeze blowing. Oh yeah, good time for a good smoke! I picked out a Bolivar Libertadors from 2007 and headed out to the good ‘ol walnut tree with the wife and baby girl. This was a gorgeous cigar with medium brown wrapper that was smooth and noticeable oils. There was a very hefty weight in the hand, almost too heavy it seemed, with a slight give when squeezed. I punched the cap with the largest ring on my knife and found the draw with a little too much resistance, but adequate air flowing to hopefully still work well.

With the foot nice and toasted, I took a few puffs to get it burning good, and then took my first draw. I found a very light spice on the back of the throat with the smoke itself somewhat mild over the palate. The flavor was of rich, sweet tobacco with faint hints of roasted nuts, cocoa, and wood. I could almost detect the typical Bolivar profile, but again somewhat faint.

The burn started out a little lopsided at the beginning and didn’t seem to want to correct itself. A strong mottled, medium gray ash formed that I knocked off at about an inch in. The smoke continued to be mild in body throughout the first half of the cigar with the draw a bit on the tight side, seeming to get tighter the further in I got. There was a very nice, lasting finish that was quite tasty on the palate after exhaling.

I found the body to pick up a little around the halfway mark, possibly hitting almost a medium strength, with a perfect cinnamon spice on the back of the throat. Flavors strengthened slightly as well to a stronger cocoa and roasted nut taste. Earth and wood came through as well. I was still not quite getting the Bolivar profile I was hoping for, however it still had really good flavors.

The final third really kicked in with a nice, medium body with darker flavors of sweet, rich cocoa, roasted nuts and a nice orange zest. The burn got to one side pretty bad at one point, and I ended up having to do a serious touch up to the foot. After this though, the burn stayed fairly sharp. A charred wood taste appeared towards the end and actually tasted fairly good. There was a very nice, long finish that lasted on the top of the tongue.

This was a very good cigar although it really didn’t have the Bolivar profile until right at the very end where the strength and flavors really picked up. With the draw as tight as it was and the weight of the cigar, I’d have to say there was a little overfill going on. However, more than enough smoke was pulled through with a couple good puff and then a long draw. I’d have to say these still have some more downtime to go and possibly in a few years will be fantastic.
