Cooked my wife a huge meal for Mother’s Day as well as did most of the cleaning and such. Just finished up the dishes and am now putting my feet up long enough to smoke this La Aurora Lancero received from my very good friend Clint (Moecizlak). With a pale brown wrapper, this lancero looks to be constructed well with one prominent vein running the length of the cigar and a very nice multi-layered cap on top. There’s a very good weight in the hand, not much give when squeezed, and once the cap is punched I find a draw that’s semi-tight, however I’m still able to get plenty of air through.

Fire to the foot, I take a couple of puffs and first draw has a really good white pepper spice on the back of the throat. The smoke itself is a good medium body with a nice toasted nut, vanilla, and wood taste that is spot on delicious. Clint was right, this really is an excellent smoke!

The burn is sharp with a medium gray ash forming that is very firm, and tiny specks of tooth can be seen from the Cameroon wrapper. Smoke is flowing well enough from the slightly over resistant draw, medium bodied and the same delicious flavors coming through as previously described. The spice is really good on the palate with a nice, lasting finish.

The sun has sunk down behind the trees; dusk is setting in. A mocking bird is singing quite a lovely song in a nearby tree, and I can hear a hoot owl in the distance with a deep resounding voice. Both my dog and cat are cuddled at my feet, totally relaxed. I believe Mandy, my overstuffed lazy Jack Russell is snoring. The lancero is still burning perfectly with excellent flavor lingering on the tongue after exhaling. It’s a very nice evening out, thoroughly relaxed.

I’m amazed at how long this cigar is lasting, and not unhappy at all about it as I’m thoroughly enjoying the smoke. Reaching the halfway point, the spice seems to be building slightly and the body is trying to reach full. My wife just came out to inform me I have to cut my baby girl’s bangs, however “It’ll have to wait a little longer” I reply as a mosquito floats haplessly by my left arm. I can expect to do some scratching before long is my immediate thought. Great.

I notice small cracks appearing in the Cameroon wrapper, which I’ve found is typical of this type leaf. Tinker, my cat, seems to feel the back porch will be more comfortable and makes his way up the steps to flop down upon getting through the door. Mandy follows immediately after and makes it to the floor rug just outside the back door, actually looks to have her nose on it hoping someone will open it to let her in. Spoiled. Rotten.

The cigar seems to be evolving, growing in intensity with both strength and flavor. Spice has become increasingly powerful as well. Is my head swimming, I believe it is. I like it.

There’s a calmness now, the Mockingbird has called it a night and the owl, possibly gnawing on some poor rodent that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The air is still and the cicadas are singing their song in the surrounding trees. My baby girl is at the door calling me, saying something I can’t quite make out through the glass. I’m sure “It’s time to come in daddy” is close.

I’m now past the halfway mark of this incredible smoke, thoroughly enjoying the intense nut and vanilla flavors that are still present. The light is all but gone, and all I can see is the orange glow of the fire as I pull on the cigar. There’s a deliciously rich finish that lingers on the palate, lasting well after exhaling the full-bodied smoke. Both the wife and baby girl are now at the back door, seemingly insisting that I come in. I have to defer as it is Mother’s Day and she is ruler of the roost on this occasion. In I must go.

Clint, you were spot on that these are absolutely incredible cigars. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this smoke and want to thank you for sending, giving me the opportunity to sample it. I hope you and your family are well, take care my friend.

Another review well done. I enjoyed how you had two tales going on at the same time. Very nicely done. :)

Simply awesome review. Glad you enjoyed it my friend. Although I've only enjoyed a handfull of these, I would have to rank them as one of the best cigars I've ever had. Around the halfway point, just as you described, this beauty kicks in another gear I didn't know it had. Big thanks to Isy for turning me on to these.

As always a nice review Greg.

Funny to see that this vitola is very popular over in the states, in Holland not a lot of people smoke lancero's.

I like 'm though.

Ah, the pleasures of a well constructed, complex lancero. Another nice review.

I'm a huge LA fan and you've certainly piqued my interest, Greg. How would you compare the lancero to the robusto?

Are you sure Mandy was snoring. I had a dog that had an amazing ability to produce gas from either end - often simultaneously! ;)

I'm not sure if I've had a robusto. I can't recall exactly which one it was, however I smoked a preferido in one of the colored tubes (Gold I think) and it was very mild with not much spice, but had a good flavor. I haven't smoked many La Aurora, however most that I have smoked were powerful/spicy. Rod sent me a Cameroon (unbanded) a good while back that was the best LA I've smoked (other than this lancero). I keep meaning to try out the other tubed preferidos I've got, might just pick one this evening! :)

Trust me, if her snoring wasn't actually snoring, then I would've known it pretty quick as there was no breeze blowing.

The Cameroon line has several vitolas:

Preferido #1, 6 x 58
Preferido #2, 5 x 54
Preferido #3, 4 x 50
Preferido, Robusto, 5 x 50
Preferido, Lancero, 6 7/8 x 40
Preferido Tube, Platinum 5 x 54

BTW, the Gold Tube was the corojo. One of my favorite LAs in the Cien Anos Belicoso. They have also released a Preferido version of the Cien Anos line which I have yet to try. It's very high on my wish list along with this Preferido Lancero, thank you very much!
