It’s been an absolutely gorgeous day with plenty of sun, although there have been several dark clouds floating by, some releasing a sprinkle here and there. I spent most of the morning and part of the early afternoon doing yard work, and after finally finishing up, I decided to adjourn to the cool shade of my favorite smoking spot under the walnut tree. A perfect breeze is blowing softly through the just sprouted green leaves and a wonderful fresh cut lawn smell is all around.
On such a fine afternoon, I’m firing up a pre-embargo Partagas perfecto that my good friend Khari sent a little while back. This is definitely one very old cigar with the cello a dark yellow. After removing the cigar, I find the wrapper to be a pale brown and coarse with prominent patchworks of veins throughout. The cigar feels quite light in the hand and is somewhat spongy when squeezed. I clip off only a tiny bit from the head in case the draw is loose, and find it to be spot on with a musty tobacco taste.
I put fire to the perfecto foot and take a long draw that brings forth a really good zesty spice on the back of the tongue and throat. The smoke is medium in body and very smooth with delicious Partagas flavor of vanilla, wood, and citrus zest. There’s no mustiness or “old” taste at all, seems aged to perfection.
The burn is good with a flaky gray ash forming that falls at about three quarters of an inch. I’m finding the draw to be slightly tight and get a very bitter taste when my tongue touched the tip. As with many really old cigars, there’s a good build-up of tar, however it’s actually not as nasty as some tar that I’ve gotten hold of. But trust me, it’s still nasty.
I clip a small amount off the head to get rid of the tar and the draw becomes very loose.
This is one excellent cigar. The smoke is smooth, almost creamy in texture and cool over the tongue leaving a delicious finish. The burn unfortunately goes to one side at the halfway mark, and I have to do a small touch up to correct. Flavors continue to be rich Partagas with vanilla and citrus predominant. The smoke itself is evolving to a good full body with a perfect amount of spice and lasting finish that I can’t help but smack my lips to taste.
What an incredible cigar to be so old. It definitely didn’t lose any of its potency over the years, with the flavors only becoming more refined. Khari, thanks so much for allowing me to take such a fantastic journey with this rare specimen. Thoroughly enjoyed it my friend!
