It’s been a good day. Went to the skating rink and had fun with the baby girl, then I went to get a haircut and do a little shopping. Picked up a pile of corn on the cob, going to be shuckin’ those here in a bit to cook up with some hot dogs for dinner. But, before any of that I decided to have a short smoke and grabbed a really old looking Opus xXx I received from my second Santa this past Christmas, Pepe.

As you can see from the pictures, the cello on this thing was a dark yellow and after pulling the little cigar out, I could see it was covered with plume. The dark chocolate colored wrapper still had noticeable oil in it and the cigar was firm with a good weight in the hand. I clipped the cap, found a perfect draw, and sniffing the foot there was an intense smell of very dark, rich cocoa.

I torched the foot slowly getting the embers burning even, took a couple of puffs, and then a slow draw. Wooooweee was this thing powerful! A very strong black pepper spice hit the back of the throat and the very full-bodied smoke had me swimming rather quickly. Fantastic! :D The wife came out and said it smelled like I was smokin’ a doobie. Oh yeah, my head felt like it too, not that I would know how that felt or anything. :whistling: :D

The first quarter was all power, kicking my arse pretty good. Right where I took the first pic, the power started to ease back and the smoke, still full-bodied, started to transform into a very smooth, very creamy texture. Strong black pepper spice continued to come through, however the flavors following were that of incredibly rich cocoa and coffee with dark earth and wood. The finish was oh so fantastic and lasting on the palate.

The burn was sharp with a strong light gray ash forming that was flaky, bits of ash falling on its own. Flavors were unbelievably rich coming through in the full-bodied smoke with an incredible sweet cocoa and coffee taste, a simply fantastic Opus! Towards the end, the finish was so smooth and lasting, leaving a taste on the palate that kept me smacking my lips.

What an incredible smoke this was with perfect burn, undeniably rich flavors, and a fantastic finish that made me hate to see it end. To have a box of these to sit for so many years, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself! Thanks so much for an awesome experience Pepe!

Beautiful plumage  Sounds like a great smoke. I hve a few xXx but they are from recent release and not sure if I want to get into them just yet. The I like Opus with a little more downtime. Thanks for another great review Greg!

Nice review! Sounds like a great one.

You know that plume might have been mold. If you have any more that look like that you might want to send them to me for verification :sign:

The xXx is one of my favorite Opus'. Looks like an absolutely amazing smoke! As always, thanks for the review Greg.

Happiness is yellow cello!

I heard you should leave it on for best results, though.
