07/10/09 - Took off work a little early today and decided to grab a larger vitola to come out and enjoy an absolutely beautiful day. Temperature is up to 90F with 50% humidity, however there’s a nice cool breeze that is thoroughly enjoyable. I poured a couple…okay, maybe more than a couple…fingers of Macallan 15 with just a splash of water, which I find compliments a good Bolivar nicely.

The wrapper is a golden brown, smooth with minimal veins, and a nice oiliness that glistens when held in the sun. It has a good weight in the hand, and as I squeeze the cigar from head to foot, I find it to be rather spongy with a couple of spots that seem a bit firm. I punch the cap with the largest ring gauge on my knife and find the draw plugged. I mean not even a small amount of air is coming through. Crap.

I light the foot and blow on the embers to get the burn even, and try again to take a draw. Very minimal smoke is coming through in the almost completely plugged draw, which is unfortunate as there is a delicious aroma coming from the smoldering foot. I continue trying to draw on the cigar to get smoke through in hopes that whatever has this thing plugged is down towards the foot. However, from squeezing the cigar, it feels more like it’s right smack dab in the middle.

I decide to go ahead and run my draw tool up through the cigar and successfully get it all the way in without coming out the side of the wrapper. It actually helped immediately after removing it from the cigar, and I was able to get a nice amount of smoke out. However, it was very short lived as the draw tightened right back up again. Dagnabbit! Well, I’m thoroughly enjoying the scotch anyway.

The burn is sharp so far, although it hasn’t gone very far, maybe three quarters of an inch. I’m seriously thinking of giving up on this cigar as it’s making my head hurt trying to draw smoke out. Do I keep going and hope that it opens up? I do want to enjoy a nice smoke on such an excellent afternoon. Ah what the hey, I keep going.

So about the half way mark, my jaws are really tired from continuously trying to draw smoke through. I’m hoping it pays off at any moment by the draw finally opening to reveal good Bolivar smoke. Aaaaand it doesn’t happen. Probably right at the beginning of the final third, the draw opened up enough to get a decent amount of smoke through, however by this time my palate is just slap give out.

What a shame for this gorgeous cigar (that I’ve been holding onto for a good year) turned out to be plugged. I will say that the final third smoked really well with excellent flavor and a lasting, delicious finish. Maybe better luck next time!
