Ok...time for Pipe School Packing 101. I will do an extensive one at a later date but for now, I hope this will help others than is new to the world of Pipe Smoking.

Above photo is common things for a pipe smoking. A tamp, lighter, tobacco, and pipe.

Above photo is a close up of some tobacco...Dark Twist. AS you will see its like a rope tobacco but its in disks.

DSCN06200001.jpg

Above photo is the tobacco for the first layer just loose in the bowl.

Above photo is the tobacco after its been packed in nicely. The draw is sorta loose for this layer. Always draw and see how it is before proceeding to the next layer.

Above pictures is the 2nd and 3rd layer before its packed in. I got ahead of myself and forgot to take a photo of the 2nd layer packed.

DSCN06240001.jpg

Above photo is the final layer all tucked in and ready to fire up. Its not a tight draw, but it is far from loose. Think of a torpedo cigar that you cut a little to far and hopefully this will get you some idea what the draw on the pipe should be for the final layer.

Above photo is the first "toasting" of the tobacco in the pipe.

DSCN06270001.jpg

Above photo is the tobacco completely "toasted." The pipe tobacco will swell up and rise in the bowl as it gets warm.

DSCN06280001.jpg

Above picture is the tobacco after its been tampered down. You can sort of see the cherry of the heated tobacco.

DSCN06290001.jpg

Above photo is a successful lit as the tobacco is a cherry red now.

DSCN06310001.jpg

Above picture is the ash on top before I dump it off and retamp it. I didn't need to relight the tobacco at all.

DSCN06320001.jpg

Above picture is after I tapped out gently the top layer of tobacco and then I used my tamper on it.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a18/Mr_Pe...SCN06350001.jpg
Above photo is after I tapped out the middle layer of tobacco. I then tamped it down once again. I didn't need to relight once again.

DSCN06360001.jpg

Above picture is the initial layer of tobacco. This is the tobacco that can get nasty as it traps the moisture and bakes at the bottom of the pipe. I generally won't smoke this section of tobacco unless its really good like the Dark Twist.

Whoops. Nice pics Mr. Peat. I just posed the links to some videos in the other thread. Looks like they may have been better placed here perhaps if this is going to be a general packing thread?

Can you also use these instructions to pack this:

<Excellent info!!!>

Very funny... Unfortunately packing is a big issue when it comes to smoking a pipe. It actually takes some skill to do unlike a cigar. :p

And its a common problem with new pipe smokers to have major issues so it was time to do a serious thread so others can learn.

As far as the water banng being funny...YUP!

The instructions are excellent. I had JimD walk me through it when I first had a pipe...lighting and re-lighting all the time!

I didn't need to relight the bowl I took pictures of nor do a touch up. But then again, 10 years of smoking pipes will do that for you. I just hope it helps as the pictures show the toasting of the tobacco pretty well I hope.
