I had to box up a fiver of these this morning, so went ahead and took one out for myself. The wrapper is a medium brown in color, somewhat blotchy, and has noticeable oils. There’s a slight give when squeezed, has a good weight in the hand, and with the tapered cap cut I find a perfect draw of fresh tobacco coming through.

The tapered foot lit easily and after a couple good puffs to get it burning good, I take a long draw. A nice black pepper spice hits the back of the throat from the good medium-bodied smoke with a sweet taste of vanilla bean, cocoa, and fresh earth coming through. The burn immediately goes to one side, however corrects itself well after a bit with a dark gray ash forming that holds well until tapped off in the ashtray.

Flavors remain consistent through the first half with the smoke itself a good medium to almost full body and the black pepper spice mellowing slightly. A really good vanilla with fresh earth are coming through, however there’s a straightforward tobacco taste as well. The finish is long on the palate after exhaling.

Towards the end, the black pepper spice becomes strong again and the smoke increases to a full body, very strong. Flavors are really good with the vanilla still present, however a more charred wood taste is now coming through. This is one very intense cigar in the final stage, no doubt. The finish continues to be long and lasting on the palate.

I thoroughly enjoy John’s smokes and this was no exception. It had a good burn throughout with strong ash, delicious flavors, and lasing finish all the way to the end. I’m really looking forward to seeing how these smoke with a couple few years age on them. Excellent smoke John! Thank you sir!

These reviews always confuse me. First of all, vanilla beans ain't sweet. Are you talking about sweetened or unsweetened cocoa? And finally, what's the ph of the earth? Is it sweet soil? Does it have a high humus content or is it just plain old loam?

As has been said before, some of us use what the different tones and flavors remind us of, as the basis for forming an idea of what the flavor may be. For me, vanilla bean may be sweet when I am thinking about something like home made vanilla bean ice cream. Cocoa is usually sweetened when I think of it, such as when I smoke a CAO Cameroon L'Anniversaire. For some reason, every time I smoke that cigar I think of cocoa and powdered expresso like what is on top of tiramisu. No idea why, I just do, something about the dry yet tasty finish does that for me.

As for earth, a while ago I bought a fiver of Leon Jimenez Robustos off CBid as I had smoked one that was straight from the Dominican that was very, very good. When I smoked the first, second, and third of those CBid ones, they tasted quite literally like dirt smells if that makes sense. A slight earthiness is fine, as I actually enjoy how fresh turned, damp soil smells, but when the cigar tastes like nothing BUT that, no thanks! :(

Damn, it was staring me in the face...your above post reminded me of what I've read before, I should have keyed in on what it was, my apologies...I've got a nasty bug right now and all the meds I am tanked up on are not leaving me in the best state of mind. I've been a wee bit sluggish both physically and mentally...sorry! :(

Haha, Greg, don't worry I smacked my head on the keyboard a couple times. This bug is kicking my ass! All I want is to smoke a dang cigar, but I can't taste a thing! :( I was so excited to smoke those Johnny-O!'s, hopefully I kick this thing before they enter a sick period....sounds like I better eat a heavy meal before smoking the Salamones.

Oh, and great review!

Great Review!! I just smoked one of mine out of the sampler and I am in love...it was my first Johnny-O and after all the hype I was definitely not disapointed.

I love the Johnny Os, especially the torps with the dark wrapper. I can't seem to keep my hands out of them long enough to let them age.

I've got some of these sitting in my humidor right now... I can't wait to try them! Thanks for the great review.
