Mighty windy out with some serious looking clouds coming in. I pull the H. Upmann Coronas Major out its tube and find the cigar looking quite rustic with a medium brown wrapper that has no noticeable oil, is coarse, and a patchwork of prominent veins. It has a good weight in the hand, is firm when squeezed with nice bunching in the foot that has a smell of sweet raisin. I go to punch the cap and find a small crack running lengthwise between the band and head. It’s nothing major (pun…hahaha) and after punching the cap I find a perfect draw with the same sweet raisin taste. It begins to drizzle lightly, and a beautiful rainbow appears in the distance. There’s actually double rainbows, too cool. I head to the back porch to get out the weather and put fire to the cigar.
The cigar lights easily and an ample amount of smoke is flowing in no time. Firs draw is powerful, full of black pepper spice, the smoke itself a definite full strength and thick on the palate. Tastes of strong coffee, dark roasted nuts, and worn leather come through with a hint of citrus.
A third in and the powerful spice mellows to a medium, however the strength remains full with the smoke thick, quite heavy on the tongue. There’s a sharp burn with a medium gray ash forming that is rather compact, holding strong until tapped off at a bout three quarter inches. Flavors continue as before with a nice finish left lingering on the palate. It continues to drizzle lightly although the sky is quite clear.
I have to admit this is one strong cigar, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Heading into the halfway mark and on, the spice really mellows to mild with the smoke taking on a delicious richness, yet remaining full. Flavors remain consistent and lasting on the palate after exhaling. This was an excellent smoke with sharp burn, perfect draw, delicious flavors, and lasting finish. I would definitely say this is not for the faint of heart as it certainly had a kick.
