Stepped out the back door this morning in my usual attire (sweat shorts/t-shirt), turned right around, went back in, and put on long pants and a sweatshirt. Freakin’ in the upper 40’s out! It took me a little time to pick something out to smoke this morning, just couldn’t make up my mind for some reason. I finally picked up a LFD Cabinet Selection, and although it will probably kick my arse this early, what the hey.
The maduro wrapper is very dark, oily and has noticeable tooth with one prominent vein running the length. It’s firm and has a slight crunchiness when squeezed with a solid weight in the hand. I clip the tapered head and find a perfect draw of straightforward tobacco with a spiciness already on the lips. Oh boy.
It takes some time to get the foot burning, and once lit I take my usual couple of puffs to get the smoke flowing, however not much is coming through. I let the cigar rest for a bit, then go to take a couple more puffs, and I find myself puffing and puffing to get minimal smoke out. After several minutes, the burn has literally gone nowhere and with purging and puffing over and over, smoke is pouring out the foot but none coming through in the draw. After several minutes more? The burn STILL has gone nowhere. I mean, it’s like a good ten minutes into purging and puffing. I finally just purge really hard and the burn finally starts to show further down, underneath the wrapper. More puffing and purging with tons of smoke everywhere but not through the cigar. With about three quarter inch of ash, I knock it off in the ashtray and find a gaping hole.
I decide I’m going to let the cigar go out, then cut off the burnt end to take a look at what’s going on, hopefully be able to try again. My Palio isn’t big enough to fit over the cigar, so I use my Swiss Army scissors to cut it away. I don’t really see anything that would cause the cigar to tunnel, other than the tobacco somewhat loose in the center. I put the torch to the “new” foot and basically get the exact same thing as before. Puffing with very little smoke coming through, but pouring from the foot. I put the cigar down.
This is definitely the worst burning cigar I’ve ever come across. Thoroughly disappointing as I’ve been looking forward to this cigar since I picked it up at Al’s a couple months ago. Ah well, it is what it is.
