Woke up this morning to the sound of rain on the awning outside my bedroom window, so I just laid there enjoying the soothing rhythm. About a half hour later I woke up again and the rain had stopped, so up I got, heading to the coffee machine. After a very good fried egg sandwich, I topped off my coffee and headed to the back porch with the Savinelli Liga Especial received from Matthew this past week. I really like the look of the band, light blue with burgundy, against the dark brown wrapper that has noticeable oil and a couple prominent veins. The cigar felt solid in the hand with a hefty weight to it, was firm when squeezed, and after punching the cap I found the draw perfect with a good tobacco taste.

Taking my time, I torch the foot until it’s covered with glowing orange embers, blowing on them to ensure an even burn, and then took a few quick puffs to get the smoke flowing. My first draw was powerful black pepper spice that actually took me by surprise, literally burning the back of the throat. The smoke itself was full strength right from the start with the body somewhat thick, heavy on the palate leaving the tongue a bit oily. There was a hint of sweetness in the straightforward tobacco taste left on the palate after exhaling.

This was one powerful cigar, even for me, and stayed this way through the first quarter inch or so, however getting around an inch in it began to mellow a bit. There was still a lot of spice, however not overpowering, and the strength continued to be right at full. I was really beginning to enjoy the sweet, straightforward tobacco flavor coming through that was quite rich with a very nice twang in the finish.

Through the first half, the burn was sharp with a rugged looking ash forming that was dark gray in color and held strong until tapped off. Mid way, the spice calmed down becoming just right on the tongue and throat with the strength medium to almost full. Smoke was flowing well through the perfect draw and still somewhat heavy on the palate. The flavor was as previously described, being a good, straightforward tobacco taste with a semi-lasting sweet finish.

In the final half, the spice picked back up again and was quite strong, the smoke picking up as well to very full strength. The burn remained sharp with the draw perfect; however the strength simply overpowered any flavor coming through. I’ve got to say that this was one helluva cigar, very strong and not something I would recommend as a morning smoke. Starting off, the powerful spice and strength was a bit much, however mellowed within the first inch, but still a full strength that remained through the entire smoke. With sharp burn, perfect draw, and very good, straightforward tobacco flavor, this was a great cigar. Again, not something I would recommend for the timid.
