The wife and baby girl decide to take a little nap this afternoon, so I’m out on the swing getting ready to put fire to the HDM EL 04 received from my buddy Bob recently. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect day; baby blue sky with huge cotton like clouds floating lazily by and a soft breeze that is cool in the shade. The cigar has a medium brown wrapper with strange markings on it that I don’t think I’ve seen on a cigar before. There’s noticeable tooth throughout the oily looking leaf with one prominent vein running the length. It has a good weight in the hand, is firm when squeezed, and after punching the cap I find a perfect draw with taste of well matured tobacco.

It lights easily and after taking a number of puffs and letting the cigar rest for a bit, I take my first long draw. The smoke is very mild to my palate with very little spice on the tongue; however the flavor is incredibly rich with tastes of cedar wood and fresh baked ginger bread. There’s a lasting finish left after exhaling slowly.

A third in and the burn gets a bit sideways, however after ashing it corrects on its own. I’m finding the smoke has slightly increased in strength, however still more on the mild side with only a small amount of spice. There’s tons of delicious smoke flowing through the perfect draw with flavors consistent; however I’m detecting a bit of earthiness coming into the mix that is really good. The finish continues to be lasting on the palate and very smooth.

Halfway and I’m really starting to get some good strength out of the smoke, more of a mild to medium with spice picking up as well. The draw has an absolutely perfect resistance, allowing just the right amount of cool, smooth smoke to flow through. I’m finding the body somewhat light, would even go as far as to say fluffy, and flavors continue to be rich and delicious with what I would describe as a mustiness in the lasting finish.

The last half of this cigar was simply amazing with mild to medium strength smoke flowing well through the perfect draw and spice hitting the back of the tongue and throat just right, tingling the nostrils as I let some escape through. The burn, while getting a little crazy at times, stayed straight enough with a strong, medium gray ash forming that had noticeable tooth. Flavors were delicious, rich and creamy over the palate, with the finish lasting long after exhaling.

Thanks so much Bob for the opportunity to sample such a fine cigar!

Great review Greg and your quite welcome. These have settled down a bit since being released which often happens with the Hoyo's with age. They were medium to full bodied 6 years ago and have steadily lost some of it's original strength but retained it's delicious flavor profile. Glad you enjoyed it.
