Another cool and absolutely beautiful morning here in the South, not sure why; however it doesn’t feel as chilly out as it did yesterday morning. It’s probably because I was in the kitchen preparing a big pan of country style beef ribs that’ll sit in the oven most of the day. I was thinking chicken parmesan, but the wife was in the mood for some barbecue ribs what with all the games going on. So the ribs are in the oven, I’ve had a couple of toasted butter biscuits, and now coffee and a cigar! I’m putting fire to a 2008 RYJ No. 3, which has a dull, slightly oily reddish brown wrapper that is coarse with patchwork veins running throughout. I always thought it interesting that most all RYJ cigars I’ve smoked have had what looks like tiny fuzz on the wrappers. The cigar has a perfect weight, has a slight give when squeezed, and after punching the cap I find a perfect draw with taste of really good, straightforward tobacco.

With the foot lit and burning even, I take several quick puffs to get the smoke flowing, and then my first draw. There’s a fairly strong, peppery spice at first with the smoke a really good medium strength, strong little sucker this is. The body is quite full as well, smooth but somewhat heavy on the palate. I’ve always loved the RYJ profile, which for some reason floral is what comes to mind when I smoke one, and this is no exception. Sweet floral notes as well as some kind of herbal spice are the tastes left in the lasting finish.

Through the first third and into halfway, the burn is sharp with a medium to dark gray ash forming that holds well. The spice continues to be medium with the smoke itself, flowing in abundance through the perfect draw, is medium to almost full in strength. Flavors are consistent with floral/herbal tastes and the finish incredibly lasting after exhaling slowly through mouth and nose. Delicious!

The final third proved to be the sweet spot of this cigar as the flavors took on a deeper, richer taste that was amazing. With sharp burn, perfect draw, rich flavors and lasting finish, this was one excellent smoke, a perfect vitola for the long, cold winter months.

These don't seem to get a lot of press. I'm about 1/2 way thru an 08 box and was thinking it may be time to reload with winter just around the corner. I agree with your assesment of herbal spice as the primary flavor profile. For the price these are tasty little numbers. Thanks for another fine review.
