Gorgeous clear blue sky this morning; however I could definitely tell winter is quickly approaching as I stepped onto the back porch. Glancing over at the temperature gauge I see it reads just above forty, but with the strong wind blowing it feels even colder. I started enclosing the porch yesterday afternoon, only got one side done, and luckily it’s the side the wind is coming from; good to go for sitting down and having a nice smoke with my coffee this morning.

I was in the mood for something Cuban, and having dug through one of the singles drawers I spied this ’97 ERDM so kindly received from a BOTL on another board. The wrapper is a dullish light brown that looks to still have slight oil to it, has slight tooth, and smallish veins throughout. There’s good weight in the hand, is very firm when squeezed, and after punching the cap I find the draw is quite tight; however I’m able to get some air through. Taste of well matured tobacco comes through in the cold draw.

After torching the foot and having a glow of orange embers evenly across, I take several puffs to get the smoke flowing well. Unfortunately there’s a bit too much resistance in the draw, which I’m still hoping will open up as the cigar warms. I will squeeze a cigar and roll it between my fingers to possibly loosen up the tobacco; however this one is much too old and fragile to attempt it. I puff on it for several more minutes and do give it a squeeze where it has warmed up and gotten soft, but to no avail. Digging through my cigar box full of anything and everything from cigar matches to cutters, I find one of my draw tools. Cupping the cigar rather tightly in my hand, I slowly twist the tool into the head of the cigar pushing as I go until it almost reaches the fire. Luckily the wrapper stays intact as sometimes you can hear the “pop” of a crack appearing. After slowly removing the small steel rod, I test the draw and eureka! Smoke is flowing!

My first good draw brings a smallish amount of mild to medium white pepper spice on the back of the tongue and throat with the smoke itself a rather mild to almost medium strength. The body is somewhat light on the palate, very smooth with little to no oiliness left. Ah and the flavors, incredibly rich with a vanilla citrus taste on the forefront; wood, leather and hints of cinnamon in the delicious, lasting finish.

A third in and unfortunately the small opening of the draw tool seems to have closed in as the over-resistance comes back. But, taking a couple quick puffs and then a slow, long draw brings a decent amount of the still mild to almost medium smoke through. The burn is sharp with a strong, medium gray ash forming that has small yet noticeable tooth. Flavors are consistent and complex, the word buttery comes to mind as it flows onto the palate. Slowly exhaling through the mouth and nose I find the finish lasting and can’t help but smack my lips.

Halfway and into the final third, the draw does open up allowing an ample amount of smoke through, which seems to increase to more of a medium strength with the spice picking up slightly as well. Flavors are fantastic with a rich earthiness coming into play along with the other delicious, complex tastes that is pairing perfectly with my coffee. I finish up this thoroughly enjoyable cigar, the sun’s rays now soaking into my side. What a beautiful yet cool and blustery morning to have such an incredible smoke!
