It’s a bit on the chilly side out on the back porch, snow still coming down but not sticking as it’s almost 38F. My buddy Ray just called saying he was thinking about getting on his bike (off/on) and riding over, crazy fugger. I know I wouldn’t get out riding in this mess, although I am sitting out here putting fire to a stogie. The wrapper on the Upmann is medium brown with no oil at all and patchwork like veins running throughout. It feels a little light in the hand, is very firm when squeezed, and after punching the cap I find the draw just right with a somewhat musty tobacco taste coming through.

After torching the foot and getting a good burn going, I take several quick puffs to get the smoke flowing well, and then take a long draw. There’s a nice white pepper spice on the back of the tongue with the smoke a mild to almost medium strength, the body seems really light over the palate. Exhaling slowly through the mouth and nose, flavors are rather mild but delicious nonetheless with a finish that is really good but not very lasting.

A third in and the burn is sharp with a medium gray ash forming that holds well until tapped off in the ashtray. The draw actually tightens a bit as I get further in making it somewhat difficult getting a decent amount of smoke, which makes it go more towards a mild strength with no spice at all. This also seems to be affecting the taste as it becomes even milder, almost bland on the palate. I try squeezing the cigar carefully where the tobacco has warmed, and unfortunately cause a significant crack right below the band. Rats.

The ash falls on its own towards the halfway mark, which lands all over the keys of my laptop dagnabbit. I’m still having difficulty with the draw, so squeeze the cigar with my teeth as well as right below the band, and this works really well as smoke flows through in abundance. A nice spice hits the back of the throat with the smoke a good medium strength. I can really taste the richness coming through as I exhale slowly through mouth and nose with tastes of wood and toasted nuts in the delicious, now lasting finish.

My fingers are cold and stiff as I head into the final third, having a difficult time typing. The draw really opened up at this point allowing an abundance of medium strength smoke to flow through with really good spice now hitting the back of the tongue and throat. Flavors really started to shine with wood and a rich earthiness coming through, the finish long and lasting.

This late 70’s H. Upmann Corona was an absolute treat to smoke with sharp burn, good draw, delicious flavor and lasting finish; especially towards the end. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Now to get in the house and thaw out a bit, might have to crack open a nice bottle of brew later this evening, especially if my buddy Ray is crazy enough to show up. Happy smoking everyone!
