I'm looking for some technical help... My wife's email account on hotmail has apparently been spoofed, I think that's the right term. Everyone in her address book is getting spammed mail with a link that probably is bad.. We have already changed her password to a stronger one, but even after more emails have been sent. Has anyone had this problem and how do I go about fixing this? Thanks guys..

It's possible the account has been hacked but more likely you have a virus that is sending out emails either through outlook express or MSN messenger. I'd to a good virus check and uninstall both programs after deleting your account info in each. I'm not a computer guy so I can't get much more technical than that but I've had a couple of buddies have that exact issue and it was a virus on their computer as opposed to someone hacking their email account.

ETA - It could be other messenger type programs as well. Basically any program you have that logs on automatically to your hotmail account could be what the virus is exploiting.

That's a virus,

If she logs into the hotmail account online a virus might have stolen her account info, have her change her hotmail password immediately.

Then...

http://www.malwarebytes.org/ <-- Download this and install it (let it update itself during the install).

Then turn off system restore and run it.

reboot and run it again afterwards let your normal antivirus do a full scan.

Then turn system restore back on.

Which antivirus are you using BTW?

I have a new dell with Norton, everything updated.. She has a Macbook Pro, and uses MSN on her BB storm..

edited to add:

My comp. came up clean..

Post the headers of the email being sent. That'll tell you the originating IP address of the sender. If she has a Mac, I highly doubt it's infected with a virus. Wurm's instructions for cleaning off a PC were excellent.

Try AVG anti virus and Spybot Search & Destroy. Both free programs. If she is running a Mac, it might be something Java based. Looking through your email headers are the best thing to do right now.

My PC came up clean.. After changing her password to a much stronger one, the problems seems to be gone.. No more BS emails are being sent out.. Thanks for the help..
